Compton 9th, Antonneau 13th on day one of CX World Championships

After a bad start and a tangle, Compton placed ninth.
In a season where she took her tenth consecutive cyclo-cross national title and her second straight World Cup overall title, Compton was a favorite to unseat defending world champion Marianne Vos (NED).
A bad start though, coupled with a tangled crash with Pavla Havlikova (CZE), caused Compton to drop to the back of the field in the race's early stages.
Vos got away in lap one and successfully defended her rainbow jersey with a finishing time of 39:25. She was chased hard by eventual silver and bronze medalists Eva Lechner (ITA) and Helen Wyman (GRB). Compton eventually chased her way back up, and for a while was in contention for the bronze, but was dropped on the penultimate lap and finished 2:58 down in ninth place.

Kaitlin Antonneau rode to a solid 13th place on Saturday.
JUNIORS MEN
Before the women went off, the junior men toed the line for the first race of the world championships – a contest that saw the leaders spread out very quickly. In the end, Belgian riders swept the podium with first, second, and third places going to Thijs Aaerts, Yannick Peeters, and Jelle Schuermans.
Maxx Chance (Boulder, Colo./Clif Bar Development Team), who was the silver medalist at nationals, posted the top result for the U.S. contingent in 26th-place. He was followed in 29th by Cooper Willsey (Hinesburg, Vt./Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com) while Austin Vincent (Simsbury, Conn./Race CF) was 30th and reigning junior national champ Peter Goguen (Hopedale, Mass./Race CF) was 42nd.
