NRC: Stephens, TIBCO/To the Top take 2014 NRC titles

Print (July 27, 2014) – Lauren Stephens (Dallas, Texas/Team TIBCO-To the Top) enjoyed a double dose of success following the July 15-20 Cascade Cycling Classic in Bend, Ore., as she not only topped off a stellar USA Cycling National Racing Calendar (NRC) with 934 points and the women’s 2014 title, but also helped her team, Team TIBCO/To the Top, close out on the team title with 1858 points.
WOMEN’S INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM
Stephens ended her 2014 NRC campaign in style, winning the Cascade Cycling Classic in 9:32:30, which included wins in Stage 1 and both time trials. She finished the season atop the women’s standings with 934 points. Mara Abbott (Boulder, Colo./UnitedHealthcare) finished second in the standings with 564 points, and Carmen Small (Durango, Colo./Specialized-lululemon) took third with 424 points after not competing at the Cascade Cycling Classic. Jumping into fourth to end the year, Joanne Kiesanowski (Colorado Springs, Colo./Team TIBCO-To the Top) accrued 422 points after winning the July 19 criterium and finishing 14th overall at the event. Flavia Oliveira (BRA/Firefighters Racing) rounded out the top five with 416 points after not competing at the Cascade Cycling Classic.
Riding Stephens’ general classification win, Team TIBCO/To the Top finished the 2014 NRC in first with 1858 points, jumping former leader UnitedHealthcare’s 1510, which remained unchanged after UnitedHealthcare did not record any points at the Cascade Cycling Classic. Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies closed out in third with 984 points following team member Joelle Numainville’s (Pescadero, Calif.) July 19 criterium silver medal and 15th-place general classification finish. Specialized-lululemon finished in fourth with 960 points despite not earning any at the Cascade Classic, while TWENTY16 Pro Cycling snuck into the final top five with 726 points on the heels of three top-10 general classification finishes in Bend.
MEN’S INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM
On the men’s side, Travis McCabe (Tucson, Ariz./Team SmartStop p/b Mountain Khakis) maintained his top spot in the rankings with 634 points thanks to his general classification win at the Cascade Cycling Classic. Heading into the final race of the men’s NRC, McCabe hangs on to a 176-point advantage over Tom Zirbel (Boulder, Colo./Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies), whose 458 points are good for second. Zirbel was able to make the jump from fourth to second after taking third at the Cascade Cycling Classic, which included respective first- and third- place finishes at the July 15 and July 17 time trials. Ian Crane (Seattle, Wash./Jamis Hagens Berman) dropped from second to third with 418 points after taking 17th at the Cascade Classic, while Joseph Rosskopf’s (Athens, Ga./ Hincapie Sportswear Development Team) fourth-place effort at the event propelled him into fourth with 406 points. Ryan Anderson (CAN/Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) dropped from third to fifth with 344 points despite his second-place July 19 criterium finish.
Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies held onto its top spot with 1738 points, 202 points ahead of second-place Jamis Hagens Berman’s 1536 with one week left in the men’s NRC. SmartStop Pro Cycling and Hincapie Sportswear Development Team retained their respective third- and fourth-place standings with 1116 and 824 points, while Bissell Development Team worked its way into the top five with 558 points thanks to two top-10 general classification finishes at this week’s event.
