NRC: McCabe, Stephens hold top spots after North Star Grand Prix

  
  


(June 18, 2014) – The USA Cycling National Racing Calendar (NRC) standings shuffled once more after the North Star Grand Prix in Minnesota, as riders contended road races, criteriums and a time trial from June 11-15.

MEN’S
Travis McCabe (Tucson, Ariz./Team SmartStop p/b Mountain Khakis) held his first-place standing with an 11th-place general classification finish at the five-day event. McCabe has now accumulated 584 points. Ian Crane’s (Seattle, Wash./Jamis Hagens Berman) sixth-place finish was good enough to jump from fourth to second in the standings with 400 points, while Ryan Anderson (CAN/Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) jumped into the top five with the North Star Grand Prix win, giving him 354 standings points, good enough for third. Fourth-ranked Tom Zirbel (Boulder, Colo./Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies), also a newcomer in the top five, has 294 points following his fifth-place effort in Minnesota, and Ryan Roth (CAN/Jet Fuel Coffee-Norco Bicycles) dropped from second to fifth in the standings with 290 points.
 
WOMEN’S
Carmen Small (Durango, Colo./Specialized-lululemon) propelled into the top five with the North Star Grand Prix win, upping her point total to 424, good enough for third. Flavia Oliveira (BRA/Firefighters Racing) dropped from third to fourth with 416 points after recording an 18th-place finish over the weekend, while Leah Kirchmann (CAN/Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) rounded out the top five with 408 points following her third-place effort at the North Star Grand Prix. Lauren Stephens (Dallas, Texas/Team TIBCO-To the Top) and Mara Abbott (Boulder, Colo./UnitedHealthcare) maintained their respective top-two rankings over the NRC field despite not competing at the North Star Grand Prix, retaining their point totals of 594 and 564.

Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies overtook Jamis Hagens Berman in the men’s standings after recording three top-five finishes at the North Star Grand Prix. Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies has 1510 points, while Jamis Hagens Berman stands in second with 1438. Keeping their respective spots in the men’s team top five, SmartStop Pro Cycling stands third with 1116 points, Hincapie Sportswear Development Team remains fourth with 824 points and 5-Hour Energy p/b Kenda is fifth with 468.
 
On the women’s side, UnitedHealthcare overtook Team TIBCO/To the Top for the women’s team top spot following two top-five finishes over the weekend. UnitedHealthcare has 1510 points, while Team TIBCO/To the Top is next in the standings with 1374. Specialized-lululemon jumped from fifth to third on the heels of Small’s win, which brings the team total to 960 points. Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies dropped from third to fourth with 938 points, followed by Colavita-Fine Cooking, which dropped from fourth to fifth with 680.

The 2014 NRC continues July 15-20 with the Cascade Cycling Classic in Bend, Ore., which will be the final women’s NRC event of the year.
