NCC: Clarke surges into men’s top spot at Chevron Manhattan Beach GP
(June 12, 2015) – Hilton Clarke (Los Angeles, Calif./UnitedHealthcare) used his June 7 Chevron Manhattan Beach Grand Prix win to jump all the way to the top USA Cycling National Criterium Calendar (NCC) men’s spot, leaping five places following the California race.
MEN’S
Clarke, who has spent some time in the top five during the 2015 NCC campaign, roared into the top spot with the Chevron Manhattan Beach Grand Prix win, giving him 320 points. Karl Menzies (Ada, Mich./UnitedHealthcare) dropped from first to second with 312 points following his 12th-place result over the weekend, and Brad White (Holland, Mich./UnitedHealthcare) dropped from second to third with 261 points after not recording points at the event. Carlos Alzate (COL/UnitedHealthcare) and Ryan Aitcheson (Milwaukee, Wis./Astellas Cycling Team) stand tied for fourth with 258 points.
WOMEN’S
Erica Allar (Tucson, Ariz./ Colavita-Bianchi p/b Fine Cooking) still holds the top women’s spot with 450 points thanks to a third-place result at the Chevron Manhattan Beach Grand Prix, but Samantha Schneider (Milwaukee, Wis./ISCorp Cycling p/b SmartChoice MRI) surged from third to second with 393 points after winning the event, which nearly cut Allar’s lead in half. Tina Pic (Hailey, Idaho/Pepper Palace Pro Cycling p/b the Happy Tooth) dropped from second to third with 366 points despite finishing second in California. Skylar Schneider (West Allis, Wis./ISCorp Cycling p/b SmartChoice MRI) and Hannah Barnes (GBR/UnitedHealthcare) swapped spots, with Schneider jumping to fourth with 259 points on the heels of her fourth-place effort, and Barnes dropping to fifth with 240 points after not recording any points on the weekend.
TEAM
The UnitedHealthcare men’s team further separated itself from the pack, ballooning its total to 1244 points with the help of two top-10 finishes, including Clarke’s win. Astellas Cycling Team remained second with 654 points after collecting three top-20 finishes at the event, and Hincapie Racing Team held third with 514 points despite not recording any points on June 7. KHS-Maxxis-JL Velo and Airgas-Safeway Cycling round out the men’s top five with 285 and 142 points, respectively.
ISCorp Cycling p/b SmartChoice MRI created space in the women’s team standings, collecting top-five finishes from Samantha and Skylar Schneider to boost its score to 856. UnitedHealthcare remained second with 621 points after not recording any points on the weekend, and the balance of the top five remained unchanged with Colavita-Bianchi p/b Fine Cooking at third with 588 points, Team TIBCO-SVB in fourth with 468 points and Pepper Palace Pro Cycling p/b the Happy Tooth in fifth with 433 points.
