Emma White races through raindrops to 5th place in time trial
Ponferrada, Spain (September 22, 2014) -- Wet and chilly conditions greeted the riders on Monday as the individual time trials took center stage at the 2014 UCI Road World Championships in Ponferrada, Spain.
Dancing through the raindrops atop her time trial bike, Emma White (Delanson, N.Y./Hot Tubes Junior Development Team) turned in a fifth-place finish in the juniors women's race to pace the American effort.
"We were told early on that it would be slippery because the roads here have oil on them, so everyone was a little bit cautious," said White. "We weren't able to ride the course (beforehand) with it being rainy, but I didn't think it was that bad. The real technical parts I erred on the side of caution, but being a cyclo-cross rider I think I kind of had that down. I was pretty comfortable in my TT bike and I think I had it covered. I didn't have any problems out there."
When White crossed the line with a time of 20:34.86, it was the fastest time at that point for the 13.9-kilometer course and she promptly assumed her place in the hot seat, an experience that obviously thrilled the 17-year-old competing at her first world championships.
"That was amazing. I see people (on the hot seat) on TV, in the Tour de France and all these big races. I knew that most likely, with 30-plus riders to finish still that I would not be staying there, but it was really cool to be there. Even being in the second and third and fourth spot, it was just so awesome sitting there. It was realistic to me that I was at the world championships and this good."
In the end, White was bumped to fifth place overall, 26 seconds off the winning time posted by Australia's Macey Stewart. Pernille Mathiesen of Denmark claimed the silver medal while Stewart's teammate, Anna-Leeza Hull, won the bronze. Janelle Cole (Rockford, Mich./West Michigan Coast Riders) also turned in a strong ride, finishing in 15th place, 1:02 behind Stewart.
Steady rain also hampered the 36-kilometer U23 men's time trial on Monday. Robin Carpenter (Philadelphia, Pa./Hincapie Sportswear Development Team) finished the slick course in 23rd place, 1 minute 57 seconds off the gold-medal time of Campbell Flakemore of Australia. Ireland's Ryan Muller won the silver medal, just a half second behind Flakemore, and Switzerland's Stefan Kueng claimed the bronze. T.J. Eisenhart (Lehi, Utah/BMC Devo Team) was 35th, 2 minutes and 37 seconds back.
The individual time trials continue on Tuesday with races for the juniors men and elite women. Team USA will send five riders to the start house: Adrien Costa (Los Altos, Calif./Hagens Berman U23) and defending world bronze medalist Zeke Mostov (San Francisco, Calif./Hagens Berman U23) for the juniors men's competition, and Alison Powers (Pinecliffe, Colo./UnitedHealthcare), Carmen Small (Durango, Colo./Specialized-lululemon) and Evelyn Stevens (Dennis, Mass./Specialized-lululemon) for the elite women's contest.
