Points of Interest

  • Evelyn's rapid rise from amateur to pro and then to a national time trial title elicited the remark that "She just came out of nowhere" from HTC-Highroad team creator and visionary Bob Stapleton. Stevens stood out enough for USA Cycling V.P. of Athletics Jim Miller to notice her competing in regional races while still working on Wall Street and invite her to be a part of USA Cycling's National Development Program. Her history, however, smacks of hard work and determination, which is more likely responsible for her white-hot emergence.
  • Stevens was an investment banker on Wall Street until she gave it up to become a professional cyclist in 2009.
  • 'Evie' was a stellar collegiate tennis player at Dartmouth.

Personal

Stevens outsprinted multi-time world champ Marianne Vos to win Fleche Wallone Women's World Cup in April of 2012 and qualify for automatic nomination to the U.S. Olympic road race squad.

A decade ago, choosing a career as a professional road cyclist over that of an investment banker would have been considered risky at best, irresponsible at worst. Then in 2008, the tables turned, the economy crashed and Evelyn Stevens’ employer, Lehman Brothers, filed for bankruptcy. Soon a job as a pro racer looked promising for Evelyn, who was introduced to cycling by her sister and got into racing through New York City's Century Road Club Association.

Evelyn swapped her business suits and flats for lycra and cleated shoes, swung her leg over a bike and rode off down a new career path that led to the top of the podium in no time. After scoring two hard-won victories in prestigious stage races in 2009, she went pro in 2010. Evelyn confessed that she was extremely fortunate that the estimable team HTC-Columbia took a risk on her for her first pro season but it was a well-calculated risk for the team and an incredible learning experience for Evelyn.

For instance, her descending skills were seriously lacking and so, to avoid disaster, the team's technical director took three days out of his busy schedule to put her through “downhill camp." Those three days proved to be some of the most challenging yet rewarding days of her 2010 season. The training and practice paid off as Evelyn again climbed to the top of the podium at significant races during her rookie year.

After several stellar seasons on the bike Evelyn is on her way to fulfilling her dreams — from banker to biker via a crash, and thankfully not the other way around.

Hobbies and interests: Tennis, yoga, reading and golf.

Favorite races: "Fleche Wallone, Philly and any TTT!"

Best Cycling Memory: "Being in the break away at Exergy, knowing I would win the overall and while cresting a climb, I saw my sister running alongside me with the biggest smile and cheering. Cycling can be quite selfish, so when you can share your successes with your loved ones, it makes it even more special."

Favorite Place to Train: "Any place with good roads and respectful drivers (and sunshine usually makes it even better)."

Best Advice Received When Starting Out: "You have to learn to win with bad legs."

First Involvement in Cycling: "My sister, Angela, introduced me to cycling over Thanksgiving 2007 while I was working on Wall Street in NYC and immediately fell in love. I began racing in Central Park in 2008 and, poof, next thing I know, I'm representing the U.S. at the 2009 Worlds and signing with a Euro pro team."

What motivates you? "Pushing myself beyond what I thought was possible."

Community and Charity Involvement: Works with CycleKids, World Bicycle Relief, Transportation Alternatives in NYC, SF Bicycle Coalition and The Right to Play.

Family: Daughter of Edward and Harriet Stevens...has two brothers, Michael and Drew, and two sisters, Angela and Mary.

Did you know: After working as an investment banker at Lehman Brothers, Stevens did not start riding a bike until she was 26.
