Devo Wrap: Americans still riding strong worldwide

The U23 riders of USA Cycling's National Development Program were contesting races on two different continents last week while the juniors riders continued flexing their muscles in a Belgian kermesse.

At the Ville Saguenay, a U23 Nations Cup race in Quebec, Canada, the USA Cycling contingent placed three riders in the top 20 of the final results. Nathan Brown (Covington, Tenn./Bontrager-Livestrong Team) finished in 11th place, only 24 seconds behind the winner Arman Kamyshev (KAZ). Evan Huffman (Elk Grove, Calif./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) was just six seconds behind Brown in 16th place while Tanner Putt (Park City, Utah/BMC Sportswear Cycling Team) was three seconds behind Huffman in 19th place. Additionally, the riders put the team in third place in the team general classification, only 10 seconds behind the victorious French squad and one second behind the second-place Canadians.

Brown recorded a pair of top-10 finishes, placing sixth in the second stage and fourth in the third before Putt placed fifth in the final stage.

Joseph Schmalz (Lawrence, Kan./Elbowz Racing) finished 1:42 behind Kamyshev while Jos Chalmers (Indian Harbour Beach, Fla./ZMotion Racing) was 16:22 back. Charlie Avis (Palo Alto, Calif./Bontrager-Livestrong Team) dropped in the final stage and did not finish the race.

Two of USA Cycling's contingent contesting the Trofeo Alcide Degasperi, a one-day road race in Italy on June 2, placed in the top 10 of the final results.

Ian Boswell (Bend, Ore./Bontrager-Livestrong Team) and Joe Dombrowski (Marshall, Va./Bontrager-Livestrong Team) each finished 23 seconds behind the race winner Enrico Barbin (ITA), placing sixth and tenth, respectively.

Larry Warbasse (Traverse City, Mich./BMC-Hincapie Sportswear Cycling Team) was also 23 seconds back in 18th. Rob Squire (Sandy, Utah/Chipotle-First Solar Development Team) finished in 31st, just 44 seconds behind Barbin while Joshua Berry (Coeur D'Alene, Idaho/Chipotle-First Solar Development Team) finished 3:49 back.

MOUNTAIN BIKE

A group of mountain bikers contested the Swiss Bike Trophy in Bern, Switzerland over the weekend.

Shayna Powless (Roseville, Calif./BMC Mountainbike Development Team USA) improved on her third-place result at the Grand Prix d'Europe last week by finshing second in the juniors women's race. Powless was only 37 seconds behind the winner Mallory Barth (SUI). Josie Nordrun (Corte Madera, Calif./Whole Athlete-Specialized) completed the course in 1:13:00 to finish fifth while Kaylee Blevins (Durango, Colo./Durango Devo) also contested the race.

In the juniors men's race, Lucas Newcomb ((Nicasio, Calif./Whole Athlete) produced the best result, placing seventh while Ryan Geiger (Flagstaff, Ariz./AZ Devo) finished 10th. Connor Bell (Harrisonburg, Va./Rocktown Racing) and Zach Carlson (Plano, Texas/Matrix-RBM) placed 13th and 14th, respectively.

Competing in the elite races, U23 riders Kaila Hart (Durango, Colo./NO TUBES ELITE WOMENS RACING) and Jill Behlen (Boulder, Colo./Tokyo Joe's -Whole Foods-Primal) were 16th and 17th, respectively.

JUNIORS

USA Cycling juniors continued their strong riding at a local kermesse in Belgium on Saturday. Alex Darville (Santa Barbara, Calif./Hammer Nutrition-CMG Racing Team) won the race and Tyler Williams (Shafter, Calif./Team Swift) took third.

The following contingent of U23 riders are set to contest the Giro Ciclistico d'Italia, a race for riders under 27 years of age in Italy from June 8-17:

Connor O’Leary (Salt Lake City, Utah/Bontrager-Livestrong Team)

Among the competitors also slated to toe the line are national submissions from France, Germany, Great Britain, Sweden and Austria as well as the American Chipotle-First Solar Development Team among other strong international competition.

USA Cycling is now taking applications for its Boys 15/16 European Race Camps. Spots are still available at some Regional Development Camps as well!
