Devo Wrap: Eisenhart scores big in Germany
The USA Cycling National Development Program found the podium at a juniors race in Germany and several U23 riders enjoyed success across Europe.
U23
RONDE DE L'ISARD
At Ronde de L'Isard, a four-stage contest in France spanning May 17-20, Larry Warbasse (Traverse City, Mich./BMC-Hincapie Sportswear Cycling Team) scrapped and clawed his way up the general classification throughout the duration of the race. In the end, he and Rob Squire (Sandy, Utah/Chipotle-First Solar Development Team) finished fifth and eighth, respectively, in the final results.
Squire and Warbasse each completed the first stage 25 seconds behind the stage winner, placing 20th and 33rd. They each improved in the second stage, placing 13th and 18th, 1:34 behind the stage winner. In the penultimate stage, Warbasse vaulted up the general classification, finishing the stage sixth, 22 seconds back. Squire was also 22 seconds back in 14th place.
Warbasse endured a memorable final stage. Approximately 30 kilometers into the stage, Warbasse crashed while turning a sharp corner battling crosswinds. He got back on his bike and on the second big climb, he suffered a flat tire. Undeterred, Warbasse again rejoined the peloton on a climb and sped down the descent to join a 15-rider group at the bottom. He attacked that group to bridge to the breakaway. Warbasse and two other riders attacked with approximately 20 kilometers remaining. On a descent, at about 70 kilometers per hour, Warbasse's wheel slid out, leaving him on the side of the road. He remounted his bike, drilled it and finished the stage in fifth place, moving him into fifth place overall. Squire finished in eighth place, 6:23 behind the winner Pierre-Henri LeCuisinier (FRA).

JUNIORS
Driedaagse van Axel
The final race of a three-week block of races for this particular group of juniors was Driedaagse van Axel, a three-day stage race in the Netherlands.
Facing stiff competition among the 200 riders from over 30 teams on very technical courses, the rain and wind made navigating the narrow roads with cobbles difficult. The course included several climbs from the Tour of Flanders.
In the end, two of the five USA Cycling riders completed the race. Alexey Vermeulen (Pinckney, Mich./Bissell-ABG-NUVO) registered the best final result, finishing 14th, 4:47 behind the winner Mads Würtz Schmidt (DEN). Michael Dessau (Boulder, Colo./Slipstream-Craddock Junior Development) placed 23rd, 5:20 behind Schmidt.

After taking a conservative approach to the first two stages, the American contingent pounced on the two-stage third day. The third day included a time trial in the morning and a 77-kilometer road stage later that afternoon.
Alex Darville (Santa Barbara, Calif./Hammer Nutrition-CMG Racing Team),T.J. Eisenhart (Lehi, Utah/Velosport Racing) and Colin Joyce (Pocatello, Idaho/Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team) each posted top-10 results on the day. Eisenhart and Joyce finished fourth and tenth, respectively, in the time trial, while Darville placed fourth in the road race, vaulting the three of them up the general classification.
In the fourth and final stage Joyce sprinted into second place on the stage and into eighth in the final results. Additionally, the team kept Eisenhart out of trouble, maintaining his third-place position on the podium.
Due to his strong finish in this race, Eisenhart has secured an automatic nomination to the team that will contest the 2012 UCI Road Juniors Road World Championships in Maastricht, Netherlands, from Sept. 16-23.
