Devo Wrap: Eisenhart Pays off with win in Switzerland

The USA Cycling National Development Program once again topped the podium at a juniors race, this time in Switzerland, while the U23 and mountain bike riders also posted strong results across Europe.

In addition to Eisenhart's topping the general classification, Tyler Williams (Shafter, Calif./Team Swift) topped the points classification.

Eisenhart, who placed third in the opening prologue, just in front of his teammate Alex Darville (Santa Barbara, Calif./Hammer Nutrition-CMG Racing Team), went on to dominate the stage race. He won stage 1, launching an attack from the break he was in with Williams and decimating the final few climbs with a solo effort to gain more than one minute on his closest competitors.

Eisenhart inherited the leaders jersey as well as the King of the Mountain jersey, and Williams placed the green points jersey on his shoulders by winning all the intermediate sprints. Eisenhart then followed up his stage 1 victory with another, winning stage 2a, padding his advantage by riding smartly with teammate Greg Daniel (Englewood, Colo./Slipstream-Craddock Junior Development), who placed fifth on the stage, in a break that lasted until the final climb. In the time trial (stage 2b) Eisenhart placed fourth, one of only eight riders to finish in under 18 minutes and making his cushion 2:46 on his closest competitor, last year's winner Peter Mathisen (DEN).

The final stage saw the USA Cycling contingent put on a selfless and classy display of teamwork, dictating the race tempo just after a three-man break that Noah Williams (Wimberley, Texas/Slipstream-Craddock Junior Development) had marked for 30 kilometers was caught. On a rolling and difficult course, Darville, Tyler Williams and Joyce put enough tempo in at the front of the pack to discourage any attacking. Daniel then took over on the steeper climbs, shepherding Eisenhart as well as solidifying his fifth place overall.

Eisenhart ended up in the final selection, but with nothing more to gain he just sat on his rivals and rolled to the overall win.

MOUNTAIN BIKE

Shayna Powless (Roseville, Calif./BMC Mountainbike Development Team USA) posted the best result, placing third in the juniors women's race. Josie Nordrun (Corte Madera, Calif./Whole Athlete-Specialized) was just 41 seconds behind her in fourth place, while Kaylee Blevins (Durango, Colo./Durango Devo) placed sixth in the final results.

In the U23 women's race, Kaila Hart (Durango, Colo./NO TUBES ELITE WOMENS RACING) finished sixth and Jill Behlen (Boulder, Colo./Tokyo Joe's -Whole Foods-Primal) was ninth in the final results.

In the juniors men's race, Shane Skelton (Shadowhills, Calif./Whole Athlete-Specialized), Tyler Coplea (Fountain Hills, Ariz./BMC Mountainbike Development Team USA) and Zach Carlson (Plano, Texas/Matrix-RBM) finished 12th, 13th and 14th. Ryan Geiger (Flagstaff, Ariz./AZ Devo) was the next American to cross the finish line, placing 19th, while Lucas Newcomb (Nicasio, Calif./Whole Athlete) placed 21st. Connor Bell (Harrisonburg, Va./Rocktown Racing) rounded out the Americans' effort in this category, placing 28th in the final results.

Bush put himself into a small, early breakaway which lasted about 40 kilometers before being caught on the first paved section. Jungels rode away from his competitors, as the second and third-place riders finished 2:49 behind him.

Matthew Lipscomb (Decatur, Ga./Hincapie Development Team) topped the USA Cycling contingent, placing 38th overall. Eamon Lucas (Fremont, Calif./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) and Paul Lynch (Colchester, Conn./Team Type 1-Development) each were 11:30 behind Jungels in 49th and 53rd, respectively. Max Durtschi (Sun Valley, Idaho/Chipotle-First Solar Development Team) was the fourth USA Cycling rider to complete the race, finshing 25:40 back.

Another group of six U23 riders competed in the Tour de Gironde for USA Cycling from May 26-28 in France.

Rob Squire (Sandy, Utah/Chipotle-First Solar Development Team) placed 38th overall, 1:24 behind the winner Nicky Van Der Lijke (NED) in the final results. Jesse Goodrich (Louisville, Colo./Juwi Solar Racing), who placed 63rd overall (3:55 back), recorded the contingent's best result in two of the three stages, placing 21st and 13th in the second and third stages, after finishing 97th in the opener.Daniel Eaton (Mesa, Ariz./Mesa Cycles Shop and Racing Team) was two seconds behind Goodrich, in 64th while Connor O’Leary (Salt Lake City, Utah/Bontrager-Livestrong Team) was 91st.

Joshua Berry (Coeur D'Alene, Idaho/Chipotle-First Solar Development Team) and Larry Warbasse (Traverse City, Mich./BMC-Hincapie Sportswear Cycling Team) also contested the race for USA Cycling.
