(Sept. 20, 2017) – The elite men’s field wrapped up the time trial competition on Wednesday at the 2017 UCI Road World Championships in Bergen, Norway.

The challenging 31-kilometer course saw many riders opt to change out their time trial bikes for their road bikes on the fly -- in a cyclo-cross-like bike exchange -- before the final grueling climb to the finish. Adding to the challenge of the course were rain showers that moved in late in the day just as the top competitors took to the coastal streets of Bergen.

Americans Tejay Van Garderen (Aspen, Colo./BMC Racing Team) and Joey Rosskopf (Decatur, Ga./BMC Racing Team), finished 26th and 41st, respectively. Van Garderen stopped the clock at 47 minutes, 28.52 seconds, while Rosskopf came in at 48:28.20.

Tom Dumoulin (NED) took the win by nearly a minute in 44:41.00, followed by Primoz Roglic (SLO) 57.79 seconds back. Tour de France champion Chris Froome (GBR) earned the bronze in 46:02.25.

Following a rest day on Thursday, the road races open on Friday with the junior women and U23 men.

The U.S. junior women will look to build on the silver medal won in last year’s race by Skylar Schneider. The four-member American team racing the four lap, 76.4-kilometer course will be Alijah Beatty (Washington, Iowa/NorthStar Development), Megan Heath (Alpharetta, Ga./Rally Sport Cycling Team), Summer Moak (Phoenix, Ariz./TWENTY20 Pro Cycling) and Abigail Youngwerth (Boise, Idaho/TWENTY20 Pro Cycling).

The U23 men’s team is seeking the first American medal in the event since 2010. Will Barta (Boise, Idaho/Axeon Hagens Berman), Ian Garrison (Decatur, Ga./Axeon Hagens Berman), time trial silver medalist Brandon McNulty (Phoenix, Ariz./Rally Cycling), Justin Oien (Escondido, Calif./Caja Rural-Seguras RGA) and Neilson Powless (Roseville, Calif./Axeon Hagens Berman) will take on the 191-kilometer course that includes 10 climbs of Mount Ulriken.
