Dygert, Stephens Top Ten in Worlds Time Trial
(Sept. 19, 2017) – Twenty year-old Chloe Dygert (Bremerton, Wash./Sho-Air TWENTY20) narrowly missed the podium in her first elite race at the UCI Road World Championships in Bergen, Norway, on Tuesday. Dygert placed fourth in the women’s elite time trial, while U.S. teammate Lauren Stephens (Dallas, Texas/Team TIBCO-Silicon Valley Bank) gave Team USA a second top-ten finish by placing eighth.
Dygert, who captured both the time trial and road race titles in the junior division at the 2015 World Championships in Richmond, Va., turned in a phenomenal ride of 29 minutes, 28.30 seconds over the 21.1-kilometer course along the streets and hills of Bergen. With 18 riders left to finish, Dygert found herself in bronze-medal position until Katrin Garfoot (AUS), the third-to-last rider to start, nudged her from the podium with a time of 29:09.28. The Netherlands claimed the top two positions with Annemiek van Vleuten winning gold in 28:50.35, and Anna van der Breggen taking the silver, 12.16 seconds behind. Stephens was 1:19.86 off the winning time set by van Vleuten.
Reigning time trial world champion Amber Neben (Lake Forest, Calif./Team Velo CONCEPT) finished 11th, 1:41.99 off the winning pace, and Tayler Wiles (Fairfax, Calif./UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling) placed 25th, 2:46.51 back.
Earlier in the day, the junior men took on the same 21.1-kilometer course with Kendrick Boots (Centennial, Colo./Groove Subaru Excel Sports) posting the top time for the American squad in 29:15.96, good for 24th place. Riley Sheehan (Boulder, Colo./LUX Cycling/Stradling p/b Specialized) was 34th in 29:43.45.
The junior men’s title went to Great Britain’s Thomas Pidcock with a winning time of 28:02.15. Italy’s Antonio Puppio finished 11.92 seconds back for the silver medal, while Poland’s Filip Maciejuk took the bronze, 13.29 seconds back of Pidcock.
