McNulty Takes Silver in U23 Time Trial at Worlds

Riding in his first year as a U23, McNulty clocked a time of 48:12.40 over the 37.2-kilometer course. That time was 1:05.92 behind the blistering pace set by winner Mikkel Bjerg of Denmark. France’s Corentin Ermenault rounded out the podium, 10.73 seconds back of McNulty.
McNulty’s teammate, Neilson Powless (Roseville, Calif./Axeon Hagens Berman), was also on pace to challenge for a podium finish but suffered a crash while trying to fix a mechanical with his chain. Quick work by Team USA’s support vehicle got Powless onto his spare bike and he was able to regroup for a top-10 finish, placing ninth, 1:37.13 back of Bjerg.
Earlier in the day, the junior women’s time trial was held with Italy taking the top two podium positions. Elena Pirrone turned in the top time of 23:19.72 over the 16.1-kilometer course, with teammate Alessia Viglia coming in 6.38 seconds behind. The bronze medal went to Australia’s Madeleine Fasnacht, 42.32 seconds back of Pirrone.
Summer Moak (Phoenix, Ariz./TWENTY20 Pro Cycling) was the top American in 18th place, 2:02.33 off the pace, while Abigail Youngwerth (Boise, Idaho/TWENTY20 Pro Cycling) finished 29th, 2:30.47 behind.

Individual time trials resume on Tuesday. Amber Neben (Lake Forest, Calif./Team Velo CONCEPT) will seek to defend her world elite women’s title won last year in Doha, Qatar. Neben will be joined on course by Chloe Dygert (Bremerton, Wash./Sho-Air TWENTY20), Lauren Stephens (Dallas, Texas/Team TIBCO-Silicon Valley Bank) and Tayler Wiles (Fairfax, Calif./UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling).
Clipping in for the junior men’s time trial will be Kendrick Boots (Centennial, Colo./Groove Subaru Excel Sports) and Riley Sheehan (Boulder, Colo./LUX Cycling/Stradling p/b Specialized).
