Rivera 18th in Women’s Road Race
(Sept. 23, 2017) – Coryn Rivera (Orange County, Calif./Sunweb) was the top American and finished in the top 20 for the second straight year in the elite women’s road race on a sun-splashed Saturday at the 2017 UCI Road World Championships in Bergen, Norway.
The seven-member American squad worked throughout the race to set up Rivera for a possible sprint victory, but losing Megan Guarnier (San Mateo, Calif./Boels Dolman Cycling Team) in a crash midway through the race hampered the gameplan. Guarnier was taken for observation following the crash and was reported to be doing well.
Team USA worked hard to bring back several attacks during the 152.8-kilometer race that saw eight climbs of Salmon Hill. In the end, Dutchwoman Chantal Blaak was able to solo away in the final kilometers to capture the win by 28 seconds over the chasing group that included Rivera. Katrin Garfoot (AUS) and Amalie Dideriksen (DEN) were first across the line from that group to gain the second and third spots on the podium. Rivera crossed the line in 18th position.
On Saturday morning, the junior men took to the course for their 133.8-killometer circuit of Bergen. It proved to be a crash-filled day for the juniors with Denmark’s Julius Johansen ultimately breaking away for a 51-second victory. Italians Luca Rastelli and Michele Gazzoli claimed the silver and bronze medals at the front of the chase group.
For the U.S. team, Matteo Jorgenson (Boise, Idaho/Hot Tubes Cycling Team) was the top finisher in 59th place, 3:53 back of Johansen. Cole Davis (Folsom, Calif./NCCF/Team Specialized Juniors) placed 100th, Sean Quinn (Sherman Oaks, Calif./LUX Cycling/Stradling p/b Specialized) was 109th, Riley Sheehan (Boulder, Colo./LUX Cycling/Stradling p/b Specialized) finished 124th and Conor Schunk (Charlotte, N.C./Masters Cycling Systems LLC) was 129th. Kendrick Boots (Centennial, Colo./Groove Subaru Excel Sports) also competed for Team USA in the junior men’s race.

“We could never just get on top of it, especially once we lost Megan,” said Rivera in a post-race interview. “It was a real shame because she was a big card to play on the climbs, so we had to do everything we could with what we had. We tried to keep the breaks within striking distance and I tried to go with the last big one on Salmon and just missed it there. I gave it my all and I think I lost all my matches for the sprint once we caught the group at the end there. We did the best we could with what we had and at least we can be happy with that.”
Lauren Stephens (Dallas, Texas/Team TIBCO-Silicon Valley Bank) was 61st, Ruth Winder (Lafayette, Calif./UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling) was 71st and Amber Neben (Lake Forest, Calif./Team Velo CONCEPT) finished 73rd. Along with Guarnier, Katie Hall (Oakland, Calif./UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Women’s Team) and Tayler Wiles (Fairfax, Calif./UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling) also competed for the USA on Saturday. On Saturday morning, the junior men took to the course for their 133.8-killometer circuit of Bergen.
