Pro CX: Johnson, Nash and Haidet closing on leaders

Time is running out on the 2013-14 USA Cycling Professional Cyclo-cross Calendar (Pro CX). With three races over the weekend riders competed hard for precious points as they pursue USA Cycling's $40,000 prize purse. On Saturday, the riders contested the Deschutes Brewery Cup in Bend, Ore., the last UCI C1 race on the calendar. On Saturday and Sunday, Warwick, R.I., served as the location of the NEPCX-NBX Gran Prix of Cross Days 1 and 2.

While the top five of the Pro CX men's standings are unchanged after the three-race weekend, Tim Johnson (Topsfield, Mass./Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com) has pulled within nine points of Jeremy Powers (Easthampton, Mass./Rapha-Focus) with only three races remaining. Johnson topped the field at the Deschutes Brewery Cup to collect 105 points, bringing his season-long total to 936 points, nine points behind Powers' standings-leading 945 points. Ben Berden (BEL/Raleigh-Clement) remains in third place with 866 points. Ryan Trebon (Bend, Ore./Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com) is holding fourth place with 711 points while James Driscoll (Sandy, Utah/Raleigh-Clement) rounds out the top five with 530 points. Justin Lindine (North Ogden, Utah/Redline-NBX) and Shawn Milne (Beverly, Mass./Keough Cyclocross) won the men's races in Warwick, R.I.

Katerina Nash (CZE/Luna Pro Team) won the women's race in Oregon to continue her rapid ascent in the Pro CX women's standings. Nash has narrowed Elle Anderson's (San Francisco, Calif./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) lead to only 54 points with only three races left. Meredith Miller (Boulder, Colo./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) remains in third place with 677 points, 24 points ahead of Crystal Anthony (Beverly, Mass./Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies). Laura van Gilder (Cresco, Pa./Van Dessel p/b Mellow Mushroom Pizza Bakers) finished second and third in the two races in Rhode Island to move into fifth place with 493 points. Emma White (Delanson, N.Y./Cyclocrossworld.com) and Arley Kemmerer (Saylorsburg, Pa./C3-Twenty20 Cycling Co.), respectively, won the elite women's races in Rhode Island on Saturday and Sunday.

With only one more race for the juniors men's on the Pro CX, Lance Haidet (Bend, Ore./Bear Development Team) capitalized on racing in his hometown as he finished second in the juniors race to collect 90 points and move into second place of the Pro CX juniors men's standings. Austin Vincent (Simsbury, Conn./Race Cf-Racecf.org @Racecf) remains the leader with 345 points, 59 points ahead of Haidet. Peter Goguen (Hopedale, Mass./Race Cf-Racecf.org @Racecf) slipped down one spot in the standings and now holds third place with 254 points. Cooper Willsey (Hinesburg, Vt./Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com) is in fourth place, only four points behind Goguen and 14 points ahead of David Lombardo (Crystal Lake, Ill./WCJ Racing), who is in fifth place with 236 points.

With only three events remaining on the Pro CX, points are at a premium. On Dec. 14 and 15, the focus will be on the North Carolina Grand Prix Races 1 and 2 in Hendersonville, N.C.
