Newell closes Pan Am Championships with third medal

(Mexico City, Mexico - Feb. 11, 2013) - Elizabeth Newell
(Oakland, Calif./Now Cycling-NOW and Novartis for MS) closed out her competition at the 2013 Pan American Continental Track Championships in style on Sunday as she won her third medal of the competition, a bronze in the women's omnium. She finished behind Cuba's Marlies Mejias and Venezuela's Angie Sabrina Gonzales.


Newell also won a bronze medal in the women's individual pursuit on Wednesday and a gold medal in the 10-kilometer scratch race on Friday. She contributed three of the six medals won by the U.S. team during the event.

Madalyn Godby (Louisville, Colo./enCompass Racing) won two bronze medals and set two unofficial national records over the five days of competition. She opened with a bronze medal in the women's 500-meter time trial with a national record time of 34.300, besting the previous mark of 34.426 set by Tammy Thomas in Mexico City in 2001. Two days later, she set her second unofficial national record of the week and captured the bronze medal in the women's 200-meter flying start time trial with a time of 10.933, breaking the previous mark of 11.046 set in 2012 by Tela Crane in Colorado Springs.

In Wednesday's men's team sprint, the trio of Nathan Koch (Los Alamitos, Calif./Bike Religion), Matthew Baranoski (Perkasie, Pa./Pure Energy Cycling) and Kevin Mansker (Long Beach, Calif./Rubicon Cycling) set a national record with a time of 44.031 to finish with the bronze medal behind the teams from Venezuela and Canada. The previous record was 44.036 set in Guadalajara in 2011 by the team of Dean Tracy, Michael Blatchford and Jimmy Watkins.
