Elizabeth Newell takes the top step for the women's scratch race
(Mexico City, Mexico - Feb. 8, 2013) - Elizabeth Newell (Oakland, Calif./Now Cycling-NOW and Novartis for MS) won the first gold medal for the U.S. team on the third day of competition Friday at the 2013 Pan American Continental Track Championships.
Newell beat out Colombia's Jannie Milena in the 10-kilometer scratch race to claim the top step on the podium. Lauren Tamayo (Asheville, N.C./Exergy TWENTY16) finished 14th in the race.
Elsewhere on Friday, Madalyn Godby (Louisville, Colo./enCompass Racing) set her second unofficial national record of the week while also capturing her second bronze medal at the event. Godby placed third in the women's 200-meter flying start time trial with a time of 10.933, breaking the previous mark of 11.046 set in 2012 by Tela Crane in Colorado Springs. Godby's teammate, Missy Erickson (Cypress, Calif./Momentum Coaching Group p/b Atomic) was fourth with a time of 11.220.
The Pan Am Continental Championships continue through Sunday.
