NCC Wrap: Men’s, women’s standings shuffled after eventful weekend

Print (June 11, 2014) -- The 2014 USA Cycling National Criterium Calendar (NCC) men’s and women’s standings were scrambled following the Air Force Association Cycling Classic, June 7-8, in Arlington, Va., and the Saint Francis Tulsa Tough, June 6-8, in Tulsa, Okla.
MEN
Carlos Alzate Escobar (COL/UnitedHealthcare) retained the top spot in the men’s NCC standings after placing sixth in the Air Force Association Cycling Classic omnium with seventh-place finishes in both criteriums. Isaac Howe (Winooski, Vt./Champion System-Stan's No Tubes) jumped from fourth to second with a fifth-place omnium at the Saint Francis Tulsa Tough, which included seventh-place criterium finishes on June 6-7 and a 12th-place effort on June 8. Luke Keough (Sandwich, Mass./UnitedHealthcare) also jumped a spot from fifth to fourth thanks to a second-place omnium at Tulsa, which was made possible with a June 6 criterium silver medal. Daniel Holloway (Morgan Hill, Calif./Athlete Octane Cycling) fell from second to fourth following his 14th in the omnium at Tulsa, which was highlighted by a third-place finish at the June 6 criterium. Bradley White (Holland, Mich./UnitedHealthcare) took 13th in the omnium at the Saint Francis Tulsa Tough, which dropped him from third to fifth in the standings.
WOMEN
Erica Allar (Tucson, Ariz./Colavita Racing, Inc.) maintained the women’s top spot in the standings with a third-place effort in the Saint Francis Tulsa Tough omnium, finishing second in the June 6 crit, third on June 7 and third on June 8. Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif./UnitedHealthcare) jumped from third to second thanks to her omnium win at Tulsa, which included respective third-, second- and first-place finishes at the June 6-8 criteriums. Third-ranked Tina Pic (Hailey, Idaho/Fearless Femme) took the omnium at the Air Force Association Cycling Classic following a two-day criterium sweep, while Laura Van Gilder (Cresco, Pa./Van Dessel Factory Team p/b Mellow Mushroom) dropped from second to fourth in the standings despite a third-place effort in the omnium at the Cycling Classic. Hannah Barnes (GBR/UnitedHealthcare) jumped into the top five with a second-place finish at Tulsa.
TEAM
On a weekend that saw major shake-ups in the men’s and women’s individual standings, the team standings remained nearly unchanged. UnitedHealthcare maintained its dominance over the men’s standings, while Athlete Octane Cycling, the Astellas Cycling Team, Champion System-Stan's NoTubes and SmartStop Pro Cycling retained their respective spots in the men’s top five.
In the only change of the week, the UnitedHealthcare women’s team recaptured the standings lead from Colavita-Fine Cooking, who enjoyed the top spot for only one week. Colavita-Fine Cooking is now second, and TIBCO/To the Top, Pepper Palace Pro Cycling and Fearless Femme kept their places to round out the women’s top five.
