Logan Owen 14th in the U23 race as top American on day two of Cross Worlds

Hoogerheide, NED (February 2, 2014) – In his first world championships in the U23 ranks, Logan Owen (Bremerton, Wash./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) placed 14th to post the top result for the U.S. on day two of the 2014 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships.
 
Wout Van Aert (BEL) took the lead very early in the U23 men's race, and held it until he crossed the finish line to become the new world champion. He was able to hold off attacks from countryman Michael Vanthourenhout (BEL) who finished 50 seconds behind for the silver medal. Grabbing bronze, 1:17 back, was Mathieu Van Der Poel (NED).
 
The first American to cross the finish line, Owen was 3:14 off the winning pace. Next up for the USA was Curtis White (Delanson, N.Y./Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com) who finished 4:20 back in 24th. Also riding for the red, white and blue were Yannick Eckmann (Boulder, Colo./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) in 28th, Cody Kaiser (El Dorado Hills, Calif./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) in 30th, and Tobin Ortenblad (Santa Cruz, Calif./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) in 34th.

After dueling with Belgian Sven Nys for most of the contest, Zdenek Stybar (CZE) made the winning move in the final lap to cross the line in first and claim his third cyclo-cross world title. The winning time was 1:05:30 while Nys finished 12 seconds back for the silver and Kevin Pauwels (BEL) claimed the bronze, 40 seconds back.
 
The top finisher for the U.S. contingent was Jonathan Page (Northfield, N.H./Fuji-Spyoptics) who crossed the line 2:55 after the winner to place 18th. He was followed in 24th-place by Jeremy Powers (Easthampton, Mass./ Rapha-Focus) who was 4:06 off the winning pace. Ryan Trebon (Bend, Ore./Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com) was 31st while Allen Krughoff (Boulder, Colo./Raleigh Clement) was 48th. Tough luck on Sunday kept the USA's Tim Johnson (Topsfield, Mass./Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com) and Zach McDonald (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Rapha-Focus) from finishing.
