Fields wins third BMX SX World Cup in a row, Post bronze for women
The second round of the 2012 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup series continued in Randaberg, Norway on Saturday with Connor Fields (Henderson, Nev./Chase BMX) winning his third consecutive supercross world cup main. Alise Post (Saint Cloud, Minn./Redline) also earned bronze with Arielle Martin (Spanaway, Wash./Intense BMX) finishing fifth in the women’s final.
It came down to the closest photo finish ever in supercross history, but Fields held off the surging Australian Sam Willoughby to earn his third consecutive supercross world cup victory.
“He had a little more gas in the tank than me there at the end,” said Fields. “I felt him coming up down the last straightaway, so I gave it everything I had. He is a competitor and trains really hard and that just means I’ll have to go train even harder.” HEAR CONNOR FIELDS HERE
David Herman (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Free Agent-Rockstar) and Mike Day (San Diego, Calif./GT Bicycles) finished 10th and 15th respectively after being eliminated in the semi-final round. The Australians were able to put three riders into the final, with only Fields representing the U.S.
Two American ladies made the final with Post grabbing third, less than a second behind yesterday’s time trial superfinal winner Caroline Buchanan (AUS). Buchanan was able to surge from the third position and make the pass in the final turn to take the victory from Frenchwoman Magalie Pottier who earned her second medal in as many world cups in silver-medal position.
Martin came in seconds later for fifth. Amanda Carr (Punta Gorda, Fla./ Endeavor-Paul Williams) and Brooke Crain (Visalia, Calif./Haro Bikes) just missed the finals in ninth and 10th respectively. The opening world cup bronze medalist, Amanda Geving (Largo, Fla./MCS Bicycles), was 15th.
The UCI Supercross World Cup will continue with its third stop in Papendal, Netherlands, May 12-13. For more information, please visit the UCI's official BMX Supercross World Cup webpage or bmx-results.com.
