Americans grab three medals at BMX SX & 40 national titles awarded

Connor Fields followed up his victory in yesterday's time trial with another win in the main at the Chula Vista BMX Supercross World Cup.
Over 40 amateur BMX national titles were also awarded and the ribbon cut on the new, London-replica track on this action-packed BMX day in southern California.
BMX SX World Cup - Men’s Final
Yesterday’s time trial superfinal silver-medalist and 2008 Olympic champion Maris Strombergs (LAT) got the hole shot and was half a bike length ahead, but left the door open on the first turn. Winner of the 2011 Chula Vista World Cup, Fields took the lead and kept a consistent gap ahead of Sam Willoughby (AUS), who grabbed the silver. Herman finished strong moving into third to take the bronze.
“In the first turn Maris (Stromberg) left the door open and I just went through,” said Fields, who also won yesterday’s time trial superfinal. “I was leading from that moment and I could not see or hear anything behind. I was concentrating on riding a smooth lap to the finish line. It is a great start to an important season, but there is a long way to go.”
BMX SX World Cup Women’s Final
With last year’s Chula Vista World Cup winner Arielle Martin (Spanaway, Wash./Intense BMX) eliminated in the semi-final round, the door was open for four young Americans to earn the victory in the women’s final. It was the French duo of Pottier and Laetitia Le Corguille however who jumped quickly out of the gate to gain the lead. Geving was able to get the line on the first turn and stay in contention to finish third just behind the Frenchwomen. Pottier’s win, her first big victory on the world cup circuit, displayed the strength of the next generation of French talent. Part f a deep American squad, Geving also scored the first world cup medal of her career.

“I didn’t get a great gate,” explained Geving. “I got a little sideways over the second jump, but I saw the opportunity to go in high and come out low in the first turn and took it. I ended up coming out (of that turn) third and just tried to stay smooth to keep third place. I’ve been working so hard and to have a finish like this at the first world cup just fuels the fire.”
Reigning national champion Alise Post (Saint Cloud, Minn./Redline) crossed the line in fourth, yesterday’s time trial superfinal bronze medalist Amanda Carr (Punta Gorda, Fla./ Endeavor-Paul Williams) was sixth and last year’s silver-medalist Brooke Crain (Visalia, Calif./Haro Bikes) was eighth.

USA Cycling BMX National Championships – Saturday amateurs
Over 400 juniors and masters athletes also vied for national titles on Saturday at the sixth-annual USA Cycling BMX National Championships. Riders from the ages of five all the way to 50+ years of age took to the traditional BMX track on the campus of the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. for the right to call themselves the best in the nation in their respective divisions.
Over 40 champions were crowned as they not only fought for the right to slip into a Stars-and-Stripes jersey on the podium’s top step, but also for eligibility to represent the U.S. at the 2012 UCI BMX World Championships from May 23 – 27 in Birmingham, UK. The top eight athletes in each age group earned invitations to the amateur world championship event.
The day also marked the debut of Collegiate BMX with Dominique Daniels (Gilbert, Ariz./Grand Canyon University)
and Danny Caluag (Chino, Calif./Lindsey Wilson College) taking home the women’s and men’s individual national titles for their respective universities.

National championship BMX action will continue on Sunday with elite and junior elite national titles awarded on the Beijing-replica supercross track. USA Cycling and USOC officials cut the ribbon on the new London-replica BMX track along with the entire BMX community on Saturday.
London-replica Ribbon Cutting
USA Cycling and U.S. Olympic Committee officials cut the ribbon on the new London-replica BMX Supercross track on the campus of the U.S. Olympic Training Center. The 430-meter (women)/470 meter (men) track is expected to be fully operational by mid-April.
