Dual slalom caps the final day of Collegiate MTB Nats

Print The 2011 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships culminated Sunday in Angel Fire, N.M., as the riders contested the dual slalom. As has been the case throughout the three-day event, the ground started frozen in the morning and became muddy as the ground thawed.
The sun greeted riders as they contested the dual slalom on the last day of the 2011 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships. “The course went from a rock solid frozen-over dirt to riding through muddy soup,” the winner of the women’s Division II dual slalom Essence Barton (Thousand Oaks, Calif./California Lutheran University) said. “Everybody had a disadvantage having their bike completely caked in mud.”
In the team omnium competitions, Fort Lewis College topped Division I with 644 points. The University of Colorado-Boulder surged in the gravity events on Saturday and Sunday, but fell only eight points short. Union College-Kentucky topped the Division II team omnium after collecting 677 points throughout the competition. Warren Wilson College finished in second place, 316 points behind.
“The kids work so hard on it, all year,” Fort Lewis College Team Director Dave Hagen said. “I have to hand it to them because they ride their hearts out all conference season long. Then they come here and there's a lot of pressure. There's a lot of work for a lot of the kids. I have to hand it to them. They give it everything they have.”
DIVISION I
Kerry Werner (Banner Elk, N.C./Lees-McRae College), who competed in each of the four events, topped the men’s individual omnium competition with 291 points. His teammate Bradford Perley (Banner Elk, N.C.) finished 37 points behind in third place.
“It feels pretty good," Werner said. "It was definitely one of my goals when I came here was to take the omnium. I wasn't too sure about the cross-country and the endurance events. I knew I wasn't the fastest at the gravity events. I figured I had a good shot at an all-around. It feels good for sure."
Jill Behlen (Boulder, Colo./University of Wyoming) topped the women’s individual omnium after earning a spot on the podium in three of four competitions, including two third-place finishes and a fourth-place result in the downhill. Two riders from the University of Colorado-Boulder, Deidre York (Indio, Calif.) and Claire Bensard (Denver, Colo.) placed second and third, respectively.
In the men’s dual slalom competition, the final boiled down to Saturday’s downhill winner, the third seed Joey Schusler (Boulder, Colo./University of Colorado-Boulder), and the fifth seed Timothy Price (Great Falls, Va./University of Virginia). Schusler, who finished sixth in the four-cross race at the 2010 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships, was too fast for Price and earned the Stars-and-Stripes jersey.
Lindsey Wilson College dominated the women’s dual slalom, claiming three of the top four spots, including the top two positions. Crystal Kalogris (Fort Wayne, Ind.) was faster than her teammate Stephanie Barragan (Columbia, Ky.) in the final.
DIVISION II
Matt Schiff (Fort Collins, Colo./Humboldt State University), who won Friday’s cross-country race and placed second in the short-track cross-country race, earned the men’s individual omnium with 370 points. The second-place finisher in the downhill race Saturday, Owen Tulip (North Conway, N.H./Western State College of Colorado) finished second in the omnium with 255 points.
Eva Wilson (Kensington, N.H./Warren Wilson College) earned a pair of bronze medals and found the podium three times to collect 458 points and win the women’s individual omnium. Barton, who paired a bronze medal in the cross-country race Friday with her dual slalom win Sunday, placed second 48 points behind Wilson.
Paul Mayes emerged victorious in the men's Division II dual slalom. The top two seeds in the men’s dual slalom competition met in the final round as second-seeded Paul Mayes (Homer, Ill./Michigan Technological University) met Blake Carney (Camarillo, Calif./California Lutheran University), who won the four-cross race at the 2010 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships. Mayes was up to the task as he defeated Carney to earn the gold medal.
As it occurred in the men’s dual slalom, the top two seeds met in the finals of the women’s dual slalom. Barton and Coleen Pacurariu (USAF Academy, Colo./US Air Force Academy), who topped the podium in the women’s downhill race on Saturday, met in the final. Barton overcame the “muddy soupy” track to win after winning the four-cross race at the 2010 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships.
“It feels so good because I have a history with cross-country and endurance racing and to be able to go out and do what people kept telling me I shouldn't, it feels really good to go out and win it for the second time in a row,” Barton explained. “It feels really good to know that all of that work in the past and all of my excitement as a little girl just going downhill has paid off.”
