Devo Wrap: U.S. team takes fourth at Tour Alsace

Print (Aug. 6, 2014) – On a week that showcased promising youth across the USA Cycling National Development Program (NDP), the U.S. men’s team took fourth in the Tour Alsace, July 30-Aug. 5, in France.
U23 MEN’S ROAD
Tour Alsace
Combining for a total time of 57:56:39 at the Tour Alsace, the U.S. team took fourth in the team classification just 8 minutes, 41 seconds after Czech-based Team Etixx’s 57:47:58 winning time.
Alexey Vermeulen (Pinckney, Mich./BMC Development Team) took the top individual time for the U.S., finishing 20th in 19:16:24, only 1 minute, 28 seconds off of the winning mark of 19:14:56 set by Karel Hnik (CZE). Vermeulen also finished eighth for the Best Young Rider jersey. Jack Haig (AUS) placed second in 19:15:02, followed by Jan Hirt (CZE) in 19:15:06. Jeff Perrin (Lakewood, Colo./Hagens Berman Cycling) placed 29th in 19:17:46, Logan Owen (Bremerton, Wash./Bissell Development Team) took 46th in 19:30:40, T.J. Eisenhart (Lehi, Utah/BMC Racing Team) finished 49th in 19:33:26, Geoffrey Curran (Tustin, Calif./Bissell Development Cycling) placed 60th in 19:37:38 and Tyler Williams (Shafter, Calif./BMC Development Team) took 81st with a time of 19:54:38.

Kreiz Breizh Elites
Yannick Eckmann (Boulder, Colo./California Giant Cycling-California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) finished 29th at the Aug. 2-4 Kreiz Breizh Elites in France with a time of 12:24:53, just 47 seconds off of Matteo Busato’s (ITA) winning pace of 12:24:06. Torey Philipp (El Dorado Hills, Calif./California Giant Cycling-California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) placed 31st in 12:24:59, Justin Oien (Escondido, Calif./California Giant Cycling) took 56th in 12: 31:07 and Colin Joyce (Pocatello, Idaho/ California Giant Cycling-California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) crossed 99th in 12:39:25. Eckmann and Phillip finished 12th and 13th, respectively, for the Best Young Rider jersey, while Jake King (North Garden, Va./Hincapie Sportswear Development Team) and Tobin Ortenblad (Santacruz, Calif./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) also competed.

WOMEN’S DEVELOPMENT ROAD
The women’s development program competed in four events this week in Belgium, recording four top-10 finishes along the way.
Kapellen kermesse
Lauren DeCrescenzo (Boulder, Colo./DNA Cycling) continued a strong summer at the Kapellen kermesse on July 29 when she finished third in the field, followed by teammate Korina Huizar (Roseville, Calif./Vanderkitten) in 10th and Heather Fischer (Boulder, Colo./K4 Racing-DNA Cycling p/b K4) in 19th.
UCI Lotto Cycling Cup
The three women also rode the UCI Lotto Cycling Cup on Aug. 2, led by Fischer’s 21st-place finish in 3:08:59, just eight seconds after Belgian winner Ann-Sophie Duyck. DeCrescenzo took 46th in the same time, and Huizar also competed.

Ninove kermesse
The next day, the women’s development program raced the Aug. 3 Ninove kermesse, where Fischer took the podium in third, followed by DeCrescenzo in fifth and Huizar in 20th.
Oostkamp kermesse
The team closed the week with the Oostkamp kermesse on Aug. 4. There, Fischer led the team once more with a 28th-place result, DeCrescenzo took 32nd and Huizar also competed.
COMING UP
The men’s U23 program moves to Belgium, where Eckmann, Joyce, Oien, Philipp, Vermeulen and Williams will compete at the Aug. 6-10 Tour Namur.
The women’s development road team of DeCrescenzo, Fischer and Huizar has two Belgian kermesses this week, starting with the Aug. 5 Brugge-Dudzele kermesse, followed by the Aug. 9 Heusden kermesse.
