Devo Wrap: Guarnier cruises to fifth at BeNe Tour

Print (July 22, 2014) – In a successful week for the USA Cycling National Development Program (NDP), Megan Guarnier (Mountain View, Calif./Boels Dolmans Cycling Team) posted a fifth-place finish at the BeNe Tour in Belgium, July 19-20, to lead the way for U.S. riders at the two-day competition.

Guarnier just missed the podium after placing fifth in 4:49:52, falling only 29 seconds off of winner Emma Johansson’s (SWE) 4:49:23. In her pursuit of a medal, Guarnier finished fourth in the points classification following a fourth-place finish in Stage 3 and an eight-place result in Stage 1. Teammate Kendall Ryan (Ventura, Calif./Team TIBCO II) assembled a 17th-place effort in 4:51:57, which was highlighted by her sixth-place finish in Stage 3. Amy Charity (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) finished 33rd in 4:53:27, Heather Fischer (Boulder, Colo./K4 Racing-DNA Cycling p/b K4) placed 55th in 4:57:56, Abigail Mickey (Aspen, Colo./TWENTY16 Pro Cycling) took 82nd in 5:02:07 and Lauren DeCrescenzo (Boulder, Colo./DNA Cycling) finished 91st in 5:03:42.
Riding for their trade teams, four American women also competed at the BeNe Tour, led by Jade Wilcoxson’s (Talent, Ore./Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) ninth-place effort in 4:50:26, which included a 17th-place finish in Stage 3. Brianna Walle (Portland, Ore./Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) rode her third-place time trial to the 24th overall time of 4:52:42, while Lauren Hall (Dolores, Colo./Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) finished 50th in 4:55:41 and Janel Holcomb (San Diego, Calif./Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) took 79th in 5:01:52.

COMING UP
Fischer, DeCrescenzo and Korina Huizar (Roseville, Calif./Vanderkitten) will race four Belgian kermesses this week, beginning with the Strijpen-Zottegem kermesse on July 22, followed by the July 25 Erpe-Mere (Bamrugge) kermesse, the July 26 Sint Maria Lierde kermesse and the Haaltert kermesse on July 27.
