The eight-man Juniors Mountain Bike Development Camp team kicked off the July 3-13 Mountain Bike Development Race Camp with the Crelan Cup UCI MTB race on July 5 in Belgium, where the team was met with rain, roots and lots of challenging terrain. Carson Beckett (Benton, Ky./Wood-N-Wave) led the way for the Americans, placing 10th in 1:12:01, just 4 minutes, 23 seconds off Belgian winner Wout Alleman. Garrett Gerchar (Boulder, Colo./Boulder Junior Cycling-Tokyo Joe’s Jr.) took 11th in 1:12:48, Landen Beckner (Helena, Mont./USA Cycling) placed 12th in 1:13:23, Cole Paton (Cashmere, Wash.) finished 14th in 1:14:15, Alec Pasquelina (Alamo, Calif.) crossed 16th in 1:15:03, Daniel Johnson (Laguna Hills, Calif./Blackstar Racing) took 17th in 1:15:24 and Steffen Anderson (Soquel, Calif./Santa Cruz Development Team) placed 20th in 1:17:48, giving the U.S. seven top-20 finishes. Soren Anderson (Soquel, Calif./Santa Cruz Development Team) finished 22nd in 1:19:57.

Landgraaf UCI MTB

On July 6, the team moved on to the Netherlands for the Landgraaf UCI MTB race, where the rain was traded for humidity and the Americans cracked the top 10 for the second-straight day. Beckner’s 1:30:02 finish was good enough for 10th, trailing winner Milan Vader’s (NED) time of 1:22:32 by 7 minutes, 29 seconds. Paton came in 13th in 1:31:10, Johnson took 18th in 1:15:38, Gerchar placed 23rd in 1:18:46, Soren Anderson finished 24th in 1:18:57 and Pasqualina crossed 29th in 1:26:55. Beckett and Steffen Andersen also competed at the Landgraaf UCI MTB.

WOMEN’S DEVELOPMENT ROAD

Beveren-Waas and Watervliet kermesses

Huizar represented the women’s development road team at the Beveren-Wass and Watervliet July 6 and July 7, respectively. She was greeted with bad weather, but was able to dig deep for a 17th-place result at the Beveren-Waas. Huizar climbed back in the saddle the next day at the Watervliet, a 90km kermesse in the Belgian countryside made up of narrow roads and windy conditions. After spending some time around the top five, Huizar ultimately finished the race 42nd.

MORE ABOUT THE USA CYCLING NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Want to be part of USA Cycling’s Development Program? The first step is getting on USA Cycling’s radar. One of the best ways to do this is by attending a USA Cycling Regional Talent Identification Camp. The primary goal of the Talent ID Camps is to recognize athletes who, at an early age, show signs of potential future success in cycling. Receiving instruction from some of USA Cycling’s finest coaches, the camps also provide the necessary framework to improve the athletes' skill set thus helping them progress in their talent development. In some cases, the Regional Talent ID Camps assist in selecting riders for international competition and/or a national development camp.
