Devo Wrap: Costa coasts to Tour du Pays de Vaud win

Print (June 2, 2014) – One of the most successful weekends of 2014 had USA Cycling National Development Program (NDP) athletes climbing podiums all weekend at three European road races.
JUNIORS MEN’S ROAD
Tour du Pays de Vaud
Adrien Costa (Los Altos, Calif./Hagens Berman U-23) won the Tour du Pays de Vaud in Switzerland, May 29-June 1, with a top time of 7:12:12. Costa made his move on stage 2a after the team regained control of the peloton and set him up to ride away solo to win the mountain top finish at Les Diablerettes. This earned him both the Best Young Rider jersey and yellow. Kevin Geniets (LUX) placed second after finishing one minute, 44 seconds off of Costa’s pace. Wil Barta (Boise, Idaho/BYRDS (Boise Young Rider Dev Squad)) took third after winning the event’s first stage, while Phil O'Donnell (Suwanee, Ga./ Hot Tubes) finished fourth and won the King of the Mountain jersey. Efren Flores (San Diego, Calif./LUX-Specialized Cynergy) rounded out the top 5. Connor Brown (Grandview, Mo./Team Winded Development) finished the Tour du Pays de Vaud in 28th, while Jonny Brown (Covington, Tenn./Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team, Inc.) capped things off for the U.S. team in 53rd. With excellent results from front to back, including four riders in the top 5, the U.S. secured the team win.

U23 MEN’S ROAD
Paris-Roubaix Espoirs
Tyler Williams (Shafter, Calif./BMC Development Team) climbed the podium at the Paris-Roubaix Espoirs on June 1 after placing second with a time of 4:33:05, just one minute, 15 seconds behind winner Mike Teunissen (NED). Bas Tietema (NED) finished third. Logan Owen (Bremerton, Wash./Bissell Development Team) cracked the top-10 with an eighth-place finish. Robin Eckmann (Boulder, Colo./California Giant Cycling) crossed the finish line in 50th, Eamon Lucas (Pebble Beach, Calif./Hagens Berman Cycling) finished 64th, Greg Daniel (Englewood, Colo./Bissell Development Team) placed 69th, Tanner Putt (Park City, Utah/Bissell Development Team) took 72nd and Justin Oien (Escondido, Calif./California Giant Cycling) finished 75th. Miguel Bryon (Miami, Fla./Hincapie Sportswear Development Team) and Daniel Eaton (Mesa, Ariz./Canyon Bicycles-Shimano) also competed.

Fleche du Sud
Jeff Perrin (Lakewood, Colo./University of Colorado-Boulder/Hagens Berman Cycling) was the top U.S. finisher at the Fleche du Sud in Luxembourg, May 28-June 1, finishing 16th overall. Gaetan Bille (BEL), Joel Zangerle (LUX) and Ludovic Robeet (BEL) took the podium, respectively. Chris Putt (Park City, Utah/Bissell Development Cycling) placed 27th on the weekend, while Justin Mauch (San Francisco, Calif./Airgas Cycling) took 56th, Geoffrey Curran (Tustin, Calif./Bissell Development Cycling) finished 74th and Willy Zellmer (Missoula, Mont./Ft. Lewis College/Gateway Harley-Davidson - Trek) placed 80th.
