Devo Wrap: Top-10 finishes for U.S. athletes across Europe, Canada

Print (May 28, 2014)—American athletes peppered the top-10 of three road and mountain bike competitions last week, as the USA Cycling National Development Program (NDP) continued its international success.
U23 MEN’S ROAD
Ronde de l'Isard
A fourth place team time trial finish and respective eighth and 11th-place finishes from Jeff Perrin (Lakewood, Colo./University of Colorado-Boulder/Hagens Berman Cycling) and Chris Putt (Park City, Utah/Bissell Development Cycling) paved the way for a sixth-place team finish for the U.S. men’s U23 team at the Ronde de l'Isard in Midi Pyrennes, France, May 22-25. Perrin had the top individual performance of the week, highlighted by a third-place finish at stage 2, while the full team of Perrin, Putt, Geoffrey Curran (Tustin, Calif./Bissell Development Cycling), Justin Mauch (San Francisco, Calif./Airgas Cycling), Justin Oien (Escondido, Calif./California Giant Cycling) and Logan Owen (Bremerton, Wash./Marian University/Bissell Development Team) combined for an impressive fourth-place finish at the team time trial held on May 24.

JUNIORS MEN’S ROAD
Driedaagse van Axel
The men’s juniors road team went back to work in the Netherlands May 23-25 at the Driedaagse van Axel, where Austin Vincent (Simsbury, Conn.) led the way for the Americans with a 14th-place finish, followed by Eric Oien’s (Escondido, Calif./Monster Media Junior Development) 42nd-place finish and Tommy Lucas’ (Santa Rosa, Calif./Bear Development Team) 66th. The team of Vincent, Lucas, Oien, Diego Binatena (Playa del Rey, Calif./SKLZ - Swami's Development Elite Team) and Connor Brown (Grandview, Mo./Team Winded Development) placed 12th overall at the four-day event.

MOUNTAIN BIKE DEVELOPMENT CAMP
Canada Cup
Four juniors men top-10 finishes, led by Nolan Brady’s (Steilacoom, Wash./Rad Racing NW) fourth place effort, highlighted Round 2 for the U.S. Mountain Bike Development Camp athletes at the Canada Cup, which ran May 25 in Baie St. Paul. Brady’s time of 1:17:36 missed the podium by just 21 seconds. Grant Ellwood (Boulder, Colo./Boulder Junior Cycling-Tokyo Joe's Jr) took sixth in 1:18:08, Liam Earl (Boise, Idaho/BYRDS (Boise Young Rider Dev Squad)) finished eighth in 1:20:36 and Jacob Sacket (Troy, Texas/Tri-City Bicycles) claimed 10th in 1:21:10. Landen Beckner (Helena, Mont.) rounded things out for the juniors men with a 16th-place effort with a time of 1:27:25.
On juniors women’s side, Shea Chavez’s (Flagstaff, Ariz.) time of 1:23.15 was good for 11th, just missing the top-10 by one minute, 47 seconds. Richard Cypress Gorry (Brevard, N.C./Whole Athlete-Specialized Cycling Team) took 15th in the men’s U23 race in 1:37:51.

UCI MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CUP
Neilson Powless (Roseville, Calif./ Whole Athlete-Specialized) and Sean Bennett (El Cerrito, Calif./Whole Athlete-Specialized) took sixth and eighth place, respectively, in the juniors men’s competition at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup #3, May 24-25 in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic. Sepp Kuss (Durango, Colo./University of Colorado-Boulder/RMCF-Devo) finished 74th, while Casey Williams (Big Bear City, Calif./Whole Athlete-Specialized) placed 80th in U23 men’s action.
Howard Grotts (Durango, Colo./Fort Lewis College/Specialized) and Kate Courtney (Kentfield, Calif./Stanford University/Specialized) had excellent showings in U23 competition riding for their trade teams, as Grotts finished the weekend eighth in U23 men’s action, while Courtney took ninth on the U23 women’s side. Both Grotts and Courtney have raced with the USA Cycling National Development Program in the past.

COMING UP
The U.S. juniors take to the road again May 29-June 1 at the Tour du Pays de Vaud in Switzerland. U23 athletes will ride the Fleche du Sud May 28-June 1 in Luxemburg as well as the Paris-Roubaix Espoirs in June 1 in Paris, France.

The USA Cycling Jr. and U23 Development Race Camp spent 15 days in Quebec participating in the first two installments of the Canada Cup series.
