Devo Wrap: Podium sweep highlights successful weekend for juniors racers

Print (May 20, 2014) – U.S. athletes earned more podium finishes last week in Holland as the USA Cycling National Development Program (NDP) juniors men's team swept the medals in one race and posted a second-place finish in another.
JUNIORS MEN'S ROAD
KogaRonde Oost Friesland
Seven American juniors suited up to race the KogaRonde Oost Friesland on May 17, and the U.S. team dominated the race. Will Barta (Boise, Idaho/BYRDS (Boise Young Rider Dev Squad)), Diego Binatena (Playa del Rey, Calif./SKLZ - Swami's Development Elite Team), and Ethan Reynolds (Boise, Idaho/Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team, Inc.) took the top three spots on the podium, respectively, while Jonny Brown (Covington, Tenn./Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team, Inc.) finished eighth.
Austin Vincent (Simsbury, Conn.), Tommy Lucas (Santa Rosa, Calif./Bear Development Team) and Eric Oien (Escondido, Calif./Monster Media Junior Development) rounded out the U.S. lineup at the competition.

Ronde van Leishout
The day after the podium sweep at KogaRonde Oost Friesland, Barta, Binatena, Brown, Lucas, Oien and Vincent raced the Ronde van Leishout, a 65-kilometer criterium. The fast and hard-fought race came down to a 12-man sprint at the end, with Vincent crossing the line in second, giving the U.S. their fourth podium of the weekend.
U23 MEN'S ROAD
Royal Smilde Olympias Tour
The U23 squad of Eamon Lucas (Pebble Beach, Calif./Hagens Berman Cycling), Miguel Bryon (Miami, Fla./Hincapie Sportswear Development Team), Alex Darville (Santa Barbara, Calif./Bissell Development Team), Daniel Eaton (Mesa, Ariz./Canyon Bicycles-Shimano), Robin Eckmann (Boulder, Colo./California Giant Cycling), Yannick Eckmann (Boulder, Colo./California Giant Cycling), Justin Oien (Escondido, Calif./California Giant Cycling) and Logan Owen (Bremerton, Wash./Bissell Development Team) contested the six-stage Royal Smilde Olympias Tour in the Netherlands, May 12-17. Unfortunately, the team encountered a string of bad luck throughout the race as crashes took their toll and resulted in only one rider, Lucas, able to finish the race.

MOUNTAIN BIKE DEVELOPMENT CAMP
Canada Cup
Ten Americans competed at the Canada Cup on May 17 in conjunction with the Mountain Bike Development Race Camp. Five racers recorded top-5 finishes and were led by cadet (15-16) women Kelsey Urban (Kentfield, Calif./Whole Athlete-Specialized Cycling Team), Emma Drummond (Springdale, Ark./ Team Hammer Nutrition), who took second and seventh, respectively, and Ksenia Lepikhina (Boulder, Colo.), who placed seventh among juniors women. Shea Chavez (Flagstaff, Ariz.) rounded out the juniors women’s competition for the U.S. with a 16th place finish.
Elsewhere, Richard Cypress Gorry (Brevard, N.C./Whole Athlete-Specialized Cycling Team) placed 24th in the U23 senior elite men's division.
All 10 racers, with the exception of Lepikhina, will compete in the second week of the Canada Cup in Baine Ste. Paul on May 25.

COMING UP
Action continues this week as the U23 men head to France for the Ronde de I’lsard, May 22-25, while the juniors will compete in the Netherlands, May 23-25, at the Driedaagse van Axel.
SPECIAL RECOGNITION
Only a year removed from the USA Cycling National Development Program, Lawson Craddock finished third overall behind Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins and Rohan Dennis at last week's Amgen Tour of California. Craddock also claimed the Best Young Rider jersey. Congratulations, Lawson!
