USA Cycling Collegiate Road Nationals return to Madison

The USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships will be in Madison, Wisc., for the second consecutive year this weekend. Nearly 500 student-athletes representing almost 100 colleges and universities from across the country will compete to win one of 18 national titles, May 6-8.

The road race will take place around Madison's beautiful Blue Mound State Park.
The road race will take place around Madison's beautiful Blue Mound State Park.
The USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships, hosted by the Wisconsin University Badgers in partnership with Team Sports, Inc., will see hundreds of men and women from Division I and Division II institutions compete for individual national championships in three categories: criterium, road race and individual omnium. The collegiate squads will also fight for team titles in both the team time trial event and the prestigious overall team omnium classification, which combines results from all three races, both male and female. After sweeping the team time trial, Marian University secured the Division I omnium last year, and will head to Madison looking to defend the trophy. Whitman College used a victory in the Division II women’s team time trial and a third-place result in the men’s event to secure the Division II omnium national title for the second consecutive year.

Competition will begin Friday, May 6 with the road race beginning at 8:30 a.m., at Blue Mound State Park. The Men’s Division I Road Race starts the weekend’s events at 8:30 a.m., followed by the Men’s Division II contest 10 minutes later. The Women’s Divisions I and II races begin at 1 and 1:10 p.m., respectively.

In-depth breakdowns of the weekend’s Division I  and Division II competitions, from the individual and team perspectives, are available on the USA Cycling Collegiate web page.

The team time trials take center stage on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. with the Women’s Division II race. An awards banquet recognizing the winners of the road races and team time trials is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the University of Wisconsin Memorial Union on Lake Mendota. For those who would prefer not to eat at the banquet, but wish to attend the awards ceremony, there will be standing room available at approximately 8 p.m., after dinner is served. Attending only the awards ceremony is free.
A highlight of the weekend’s racing, Sunday’s criterium competition, will take place in University Research Park, just west of the University’s campus. Each race is slated to begin 75 minutes after the previous beginning starting at 8 a.m. with the Women’s Division II race, Women’s Division II race scheduled for 9:15 a.m., Men’s Division II contest at 10:30 a.m. and the Men’s Division I race slated for noon.

The USA Cycling Collegiate Awards Banquet recognizing the winners of the criterium, individual omnium and team omnium will then take place at 2 p.m., at the Great Dane Pub and Brewing Company in downtown Madison. For a complete schedule of the weekend’s events, visit the event webpage.

Cycling is one of few collegiate sports to equally weigh the male and female performances to determine an overall, season-long team winner across all disciplines. The road national championships mark the fourth and final event to be factored into the overall season tally. Last season’s overall defending champions Marian University and Whitman College will be looking to retain their overall team Division I and II season crowns this weekend in Madison. In Division I, Marian University will face stiff competition from Lees McRae College, which hopes to improve on last year’s second-place finish and build on their Cyclo-cross Team Omnium in December, as well as perennial powerhouses Fort Lewis College, University of California-Davis, Stanford University, Midwestern State University and Pennsylvania State University. Appalachian State University will be competitive in its first year as a Division I school, after surpassing 15,000 full-time students last summer. After losing many of their male riders to graduation, Whitman College will face a stiff challenge in retaining the Division II team omnium. Among the competitors for Whitman College’s crown is Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Mars Hill College, Mesa state College and the United States Military Academy. Fort Lewis College holds a five-point lead over Lees McRae in the Division I team omnium standings after three of four events. Mars Hill College has a four-point edge over MIT in the Division II team omnium standings, heading into the fourth and final event.

In addition to a national championship, the women’s competition in Madison will once again serve as a qualifier for the Collegiate All-Stars. These select athletes will earn an invitation to the Nature Valley Grand Prix, one of the highest-ranked stage races on USA Cycling’s National Racing Calendar held in and around Minneapolis, Minn., June 15-19. The final individual omnium standings at the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships will determine the all-star squad that will compete alongside some of the nation’s top pro women. In addition to an invitation to the Minnesota event, the team will receive housing, a travel stipend, ground transportation, clothing and the direction of a team manager throughout the week. As a part of the weekend’s activities, a number of events will be offered throughout the weekend. From 2-6 p.m. on Thursday, registrants can meet and greet the collegiate board of trustees at the same location as registration and packet pick up for the weekend’s races. On Friday, from 7-8:30 p.m., the collegiate board will hold an open meeting on proposed rule changes for 2012, including the standardization of points structures across conferences. Beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday, the collegiate board will host a meeting to discuss topics pertaining to women in collegiate cycling, including recruiting, retention, training and racing. At 4 p.m. on Saturday, there will be a USA Cycling Mechanics Clinic for collegiate teams. This clinic is free to all collegiate racers and support staff. Please RSVP for this clinic to Jeffrey Hansen at JHansen@USACycling.org.
