Points of Interest

  • Taylor is the son of Tour de France stage winner Davis Phinney and Olympic cycling and speedskating gold medalist Connie Carpenter-Phinney.
  • In addition to her gold medal in the 1984 Olympic Games, Taylor's mother Connie also competed in speedskating events at the 1972 Olympic Winter Games. She's also a former world champion in Taylor's former track cycling event — the individual pursuit.
  • Taylor lived in Italy for three years as a teenager while his parents ran a European bike touring company. He is also fluent in Italian.

Personal

After taking up competitive cycling the year before racing in USA Cycling's National Development Program, Taylor Phinney exploded onto the world cycling scene in 2007 at the age of 17 when he captured his first world title at the Junior World Championships in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

He has since collected four more rainbow jerseys in both road and track racing. His dedication is nothing short of extraordinary, yet genetics count too, especially when his parents are both Olympic medalists in cycling.

His mother, Connie Carpenter, was the first-ever Olympic gold medalist in the women's mass-start road race, an event first held at the Los Angeles Games in 1984. His father, Davis, was an Olympic bronze medalist in the team time trial that same year, and is one of only 10 Americans to ever win a stage of the Tour de France.

The 2008 Olympics were a particularly poignant time for the Phinney family as Davis was only four months out of the first stage of brain surgery in his battle against Parkinson's disease. Taylor credits his parents for building his confidence and character, and cites them as his most important support structure.

Despite his parents' legendary status in the sport, Taylor didn't possess an interest in competitive cycling until he attended the Tour de France while living in Europe for a period with his family. Shortly thereafter he found himself competing in the North Boulder Criterium, the same event that caused his father to fall in love with the sport three decades earlier.

The feverish buzz that's been humming around Taylor speculates that the U.S. may be home to yet another of the world's greatest cyclists. Coached by fellow Boulder resident Neal Henderson, Phinney's results indicate no signs of slowing down.

Off the bike, Taylor enjoys skiing at terrain parks, playing video games, doing flips on the trampoline and hanging out with his friends.
