Phinney gets silver in Road Worlds TT; Van Garderen is fourth

Taylor grabbed a silver in the elite men's TT on Wednesday.

Valkenburg, Netherlands (September 19, 2012) -- Taylor Phinney (Boulder, Colo./BMC Racing) earned a silver medal in the elite men’s time trial at the UCI Road World Championships today in the Netherlands.

The 22-year-old Phinney posted a time of 58:38.76 over the 45.7 kilometers to finish with the second fastest time, 5.37 off the winning pace of German Tony Martin who took his second straight world title. The silver medal was added to Phinney’s impressive hardware collection which also includes a gold from winning the U23 time trial world title in 2010.

Phinney’s BMC teammate and fellow graduate of USA Cycling’s National Development Prgoram, Tejay van Garderen (Boulder, Colo./BMC Racing) barely missed the podium after clocking a 1:00:28.13 to take fourth place behind bronze medalist Vasil Kiryienka (BLR).

The silver medal earned today is in addition to the silver earned by Evelyn Stevens in yesterday’s elite women’s time trial.

Thursday will be a rest day at Road Worlds, and action will pick up again with the road races on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
