Shaw tops podium at Day 2 of World Cup #5

Print (Aug. 2, 2014) – Luca Shaw (Hendersonville, N.C./SRAM-Troy Lee Designs) took the top time in the men’s juniors downhill at the 2014 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup #5, Aug. 2, in Mont Sainte Anne, Quebec, Canada, highlighting the second day of competition for U.S. riders.
Shaw followed his top qualifying time of 4:32.307 on Aug. 1 with a gold medal-winning time of 4:27.529, besting Canada’s Jack Iles by nearly three seconds. Iles took silver in 4:30.416, followed by France’s Loris Vergier, who crossed in 4:31.777. Shane Leslie (Birmingham, Mich.) finished 18th in 4:45.761 and Demetri Triantafillou (Salt Lake City, Utah) placed 22nd in 4:53.935.
Shaw holds the top juniors men’s downhill World Cup ranking with 174 points, followed by Vergier with 170 points and Taylor Vernon (GBR) with 121 points. Leslie stands 33rd with eight points
In elite men’s competition, Aaron Gwin (Wildomar, Calif./Factory Specialized) placed sixth in 4:12.820, just 2.254 seconds off of winner Samuel Hill’s (AUS) 4:10.566 finish, and Josh Bryceland (GBR) took silver in 4:11.807. Neko Mulally (Pisgah Forest, N.C./Trek World Cycling) placed 17th in 4:19.613, Kevin Aiello (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./KHS Bicycles) took 36th in 4:26.658, Ben Furbee’s (Los Osos, Calif.) time of 4:38.294 came in 65th, Sebastiaan van Steenbergen (Newbury Park, Calif.) placed 68th in 4:39.400, Michael Daniels (Santa Clarita, Calif.) finished 74th in 4:46.606, followed by Dylan Conte (Stowe, Vt.) in 75th in 4:48.581.
Gwin stands third in the elite men’s downhill World Cup rankings with 725 points, trailing Troy Brosnan (AUS) with 799 points and Bryceland with 757 points. Mulally is ranked 10th with 473 points, Eliot Jackson (Westlake Village, Calif.) stands 43rd with 167 points, Mitch Ropelato (Ogden, Utah/Factory Specialized) is 60th with 96 points, Aiello ranks 79th with 45 points, Van Steenbergen stands 94th with 32 points, Furbee is 126th with 16 points, Daniels ranks 148th with seven points and Conte stands 151st with six points.
Jill Kintner (Seattle, Wash./Team Norco Intl.), the lone U.S. competitor in the women’s elite contest, finished 21st in 6:13.758. Manon Carpenter (GBR) took first in 4:47.285, followed by Rachel Atherton (GBR) in 4:48.009.
Kintner stands seventh in the elite women’s downhill World Cup rankings with 455, which trails leader Carpenter’s 1030 points and Emmeline Ragot (FRA), who stands second with 870 points.
On Aug. 1, Kate Courtney (Kentfield, Calif.) placed sixth in the women’s eliminator, while Payson McElveen (Durango, Colo.) and Ryan Standish (Durango, Colo.) finished 16th and 17th, respectively, in the men’s eliminator.
Competition concludes at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup #5 on Aug. 3 in Mont Sainte Anne, Quebec, Canada, with men’s and women’s elite and U23 cross-country competition. Stay tuned to www.usacycling.org for results and updates.
