Grotts earns U23 bronze on final day of UCI Mountain Bike World Cup #4
(June 1, 2014) -- Howard Grotts (Durango, Colo./Fort Lewis College/Specialized) recorded the best finish among U.S. competitors at Day 3 of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup #4 in Albstadt, Germany, after placing third in the U23 men’s cross-country competition.
Grotts’ time of 1:21:15 was just 36 seconds behind winner Jordan Sarrou (FRA). Michiel Van der Heijden (NED) finished second. Casey Williams (Big Bear City, Calif./ Whole Athlete-Specialized) finished 105th, Sam Weber (Green Bay, Wis.) finished right behind at 106th and Sepp Kuss (Durango, Colo./RMCF-Devo) placed 111th. Keegan Swenson (Park City, Utah/Cannondale Factory Racing) and Ryan Geiger (Flagstaff, Ariz./Tropix-FRM) also competed.
Georgia Gould (Fort Collins, Colo./Luna Pro Team) finished 18th in 1:39:16 in the elite women’s competition. Pauline Ferrand Prevot (FRA) stood atop the podium, while Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjaa (NOR) and Jolanda Neff (SUI) rounded out the top 3. Erin Huck (Boulder, Colo./Tokyo Joe’s - VCGraphix.com) finished 26th, Evelyn Dong (Salt Lake City, Utah/Backcountry.com) took 30th and Erica Tingey (Salt Lake City, Utah/Team Jamis) placed 72nd. Chloe Woodruff (Tucson, Ariz.) also competed.
Stephen Ettinger (Bozeman, Mont./BMC Mountain Bike Racing Team) had the top elite men’s time among U.S. riders, finishing 21st in 1:34:29. Julien Absalon (FRA) completed the Day 3 French sweep when he took first in 1:29:24. Nino Schurter (SUI) and Stephane Tempier (FRA) placed second and third, respectively. Kerry Werner (Banner Elk, N.C./BMC Project Dirt) finished 80th, and Russell Finsterwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./ SRAM/Troy Lee Designs Racing) placed 81st.
