Points of Interest

Personal

Peter Stetina continued a family trend when he claimed his first podium finish as a 14-year-old at the annual 24 Hours of Moab mountain bike race in 2001. Before Peter, his father, Dale, and uncle, Wayne, each managed successful road racing careers in the 1980s. So while some reporters regard Peter as relatively unknown, the Stetina name is widely known to anyone who has followed North American road racing.

Of course, saddled with the Stetina name it's hard to imagine that Peter would settle for anything less than excellence, but he maintains that his family never pushed him into cycling, though they do support his endeavors 100 percent. In the beginning, Peter rode for fun. These days he still rides for fun, but with the added ambition of attending the Olympics and riding in a Grand Tour race.

2010 marked Peter's rookie year as a pro with one of the most distinguished teams in international road racing, a team created and managed with precision by former world-class pro road racer Jonathan Vaughters. Up until 2010, Peter had been a member of Vaughter's U23 squad before crossing over to pro, and the two have worked together since 2003. Peter credits Vaughters with helping him to develop without much pressure, which seems rare on a team that can afford to be extremely picky with whom it hires. Talent talks too, though, and clearly Peter's performance has proven much louder than words in order for him to hold his spot on the team.
