Stetina takes home Best Young Rider jersey from Vuelta Mexico
The USA Cycling National Development Team helped Peter Stetina (Boulder, Colo.) bring home the Best Young Rider jersey and finish as the top American of any age in the general classification of the 2.2-rated Telmex Vuelta Mexico. Kirk Carlsen (Sandtown, N.H.) finished 12th in Sunday's final stage on his way to a 29th place result in the overall. The young squad finished the eight-stage competition in sixth place overall as a team.
In Sunday's 114-kilometer circuit in Mexico City, Carlsen sprinted to a 14th place result putting him in fourth in the Best Young Rider classification, 5:44 behind his teammate and jersey winner, Stetina. Chris Barton (Ojai, Calif.) came in 16th on the stage, finishing 73rd overall. Stetina finished 40th in the final stage and Taylor Schelden (Breckenride, Colo.) was 52nd, placing him sixth amongst the race's best young riders.
The young squad also finished sixth overall against some of the continent's top racers, 27.09 behind team winner Rock Racing. Stetina also came in fifth in the combative classification.
