NTC: Track calendar off to strong start after Matrix Track Cup
The USA Cycling National Track Calendar (NTC) got off to a rollicking start over the weekend. The calendar's first of eight stops was the Matrix Track Cup presented by Richardson Bike Mart at the Superdrome in Frisco, Texas.
SPRINT
The sprinters contested only the time trial over the weekend. Daniel Gay (Temecula, Calif./Get Crackin' MS-Society) tops the NTC men's sprint standings after winning the men's race ahead of Zack Carlson (Plano, Texas/Matrix-Richardson Bike Mart) and Bobby Unverzagt (Torrance, Calif./Get Crackin' MS-Society). Gay collected 15 points for his win, placing him three points ahead of Carlson and five up on Unverzagt. Chris Carlson (Plano, Texas/Matrix-Richardson Bike Mart) and Andrew Carlberg (Bryan, Texas/Team Spincycle) earned eight and six points, respectively, to round out the top five.
The women sprinters also contested only the time trial in Texas. Payton Thomas (Grapevine, Texas/FCS-Rouse: p/b Mr. Restore) posted the fastest time to earn 15 points and top billing in the NTC women's sprint standings. Lauren Stephens (Dallas, Texas/FCS-Rouse: p/b Mr. Restore) is in second place with 12 points while Suzie Goodwin (McKinney, Texas/Crest-Richardson Bike Mart Cycling) collected 10 points. Jamie Odom (Houston, Texas/Bicycle World of Houston) and Cindi Vargas (Humble, Texas/Matrix-Richardson Bike Mart) round out the top five with eight and six points, respectively.
ENDURANCE
Zack Carlson (Plano, Texas/Matrix-Richardson Bike Mart) sits in the top spot in the NTC men's endurance standings, holding an eight-point edge on his father, Chris Carlson (Plano, Texas/Matrix-Richardson Bike Mart). Zack won the individual pursuit and points race while placing third in the scratch race to tally 40 points. Chris accumulated 32 points as the runner-up to Zack in the individual pursuit and points race while placing fourth in the scratch race. Andrew Armstrong (Plano, Texas/Matrix-Richardson Bike Mart) is in third place in the standings after totaling 29 points after winning the scratch race, placing fourth in the individual pursuit and fifth in the points race. Jake Boone (Hurst, Texas/Matrix-Richardson Bike Mart) is in fourth place with 23 points, five points ahead of Daniel Gay (Temecula, Calif./Get Crackin' MS-Society).
After sweeping the women's endurance races, Lauren Stephens (Dallas, Texas/FCS-Rouse: p/b Mr. Restore) is on top of the NTC women's endurance standings. Stephens won the individual pursuit, scratch race and points race to collect 45 points. Placing second in each of those three contests was Suzie Goodwin (McKinney, Texas/Cres-Richardson Bike Mart Cycling), who is nine points behind Stephens. Cindi Vargas (Humble, Texas/Matrix-Richardson Bike Mart) placed third in the individual pursuit and points race while placing fourth in the scratch race to record 28 points and wind up third in the standings, eight points behind Goodwin. Payton Thomas (Grapevine, Texas/FCS-Rouse: p/b Mr. Restore) placed third in the scratch race and fourth in the individual pursuit and points race to amass 26 points in fourth place. Hannah Clark (Houston, Texas/Northwest Cycling Club) is in fifth place with six points.
