Baranoski’s bronze highlights strong 2nd day of Jr. Track Worlds
The Union Cycliste Internationale’s Junior Track World Championships continued Thursday at the Krylatskoe Velodrome in Moscow, Russia.
The USA Cycling contingent earned its first medal of the event as Matt Baranoski (Perkasie, Pa./SUB 49) earned a bronze medal in just the second kilometer race of his career by completing the ride in 1:04.660. Baranoski earned a bronze medal in the 2010 Junior Track World Championships in the keirin. Kaleb Koch (Glenview, Ill./Cycle Sports Foundation Inc.-ISCorp Cycling Team) also contested the race and finished 24th after registering a personal-best 1:06.921.
Another highlight of the second day was the American team of Addyson Albershadt (Matthews, N.C./FLYING PIGS), Kate Wilson (Los Angeles, Calif./FLYING PIGS) and Jacqueline Denny (Liberty, Mo./FLYING PIGS). The three women, not to be outdone by the men’s team pursuit team’s unofficially record-setting performance on Wednesday, registered their own unofficial American national record by posting a 3:52.5 in the junior women’s team pursuit to qualify sixth.
In the women’s points race, Kate Wilson (Los Angeles, Calif./FLYING PIGS) finished ninth in the points race, collecting one point.
Jennifer Valente (San Diego, Calif./Adams Avenue Bicycles-GS) continued to ride well. Valente qualified 13th in the women’s flying 200 meter before winning her 1/16th ride before falling to the fastest qualifier Stephanie McKenzie (NZL) in her 1/8th contest. Valente dropped the reperchage and did not continue. Valente is scheduled to contest the scratch race on Friday.
Chloe Chepigin (Chappaqua, N.Y./Young Medalists-Team Rothrock) qualified 20th in the 200-meter race before falling to Adele Sylvester (AUS) in her 1/16th ride.
After the flying lap (23rd), points race (22nd) and elimination race (21st), Mathew Lipscomb (Decatur, Ga./Greenville Spinners Bicycle Club-Hincapie Development team) currently sits in 25th in the men’s omnium. The three-kilometer individual pursuit, 10-kilometer scratch race and the one-kilometer time trial are slated for Friday.
