Sixteen to represent the U.S. at Junior Track World Championships
USA Cycling announced today the 16 junior athletes that will represent the United States at the 2011 UCI Juniors Track World Championships in Moscow, Russia, Aug. 17-21.
All 16 riders qualified to represent the U.S. at Juniors Track World Championships based on automatic criteria, including winning national titles in their respective events at the recent USA Cycling Juniors Track National Championships.
Headlining the group and earning an automatic nomination to the squad via his bronze medal performance at the 2010 UCI Juniors Track World Championships is Matt Baranoski (Perkasie, PA/SUB 49). Coming off another stellar performance at nationals, Baranoski will contest five sprint events at world championships, including the team sprint where he’ll team up with national championship teammate Kaleb Koch (Glenview, IL/Cycle Sports Foundation Inc./ISCorp Cycling Team). Mathew Lipscomb (Decatur, Ga./Greenville Spinners Bicycle Club-Hincapie Development team) will contest three events: individual pursuit, team pursuit and omnium. In all 11 men will compete in 10 different events over the five-day world championships.
After grabbing six national titles in Frisco, Jennifer Valente (San Diego, Calif./Adams Avenue Bicycles-G S) will lead a talented team of five women who will compete in eight events over the course of the competition.
A standalone event for the first time in a number of years, the Juniors Track World Championships will not be held in conjunction with the junior road world championship event which is slated in tandem with the pros and U23s in Copenhagen in September. The 2011 UCI Juniors Track World Championships are set for Aug. 17-21 in Moscow, Russia.
