Warbasse's Toscana success highlights strong week for National Development Program

USA Cycling's National Development Program's men's and women's teams enjoyed various amounts of success in several races throughout Europe, last week.

ROAD

In the general classification of the Giro Toscana, USA Cycling had a very strong showing, with Larry Warbasse  (Traverse City, Mich./BMC Racing) placing seventh, Nathan Brown (Covington, Tenn./Trek-Livestrong) finishing 32nd, Gavin Mannion (Dedham, Mass./Trek-Livestrong) finishing 38th and Rob Squire (Sandy, Utah/Chipotle Development) was 51st.

Warbasse steadily climbed the general classification through the five stages of the race. After placing 50th in the opening stage, he improved to 25th, eighth, 19th before placing third in the final stage to cement his seventh overall position.

Mannion led the team through the first stage, placing eighth, ahead of Brown (41), Warbasse (50), Ian Boswell (99) and Rob Squire (103). In the second stage, Mannion again led the squad, finishing 15th ahead of Warbasse, Squire (38), Brown (44) and Boswell (112).

Ian Boswell (Bend, Ore./Hot Tubes Development Team) and Carson Miller (Bend, Ore./Jelly Belly) also rode in the race.

In the Affligem on Monday, April 25, Tanner Putt (Roswell, Ga./Team Type 1) posted the best finish, placing 22nd. Nate Geoffrion (Petaluma, Calif./Firefighters Cycling Association) finished 36th, Eamon Franck (Pacific Grove, Calif./California Giant) placed 45th. Marshall Opel (Whitefish, Mont./Team Hammer Nutrition) and Nathan Wilson (Boulder, Colo./Univ. of Colo.-California Giant) also competed for USA Cycling.

WOMEN

A group of six women contested the Omloop van Borsele in the Netherlands. On a cold day that did not have much wind, there were several crashes on the narrow streets in the early going of the race.

Jackie Crowell (Maitland, Fla./Colavita Racing) navigated the crashes to finish 32nd, 6:33 behind the winner, while Tayler Wiles (Murray, Utah/Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12) placed 73rd.

Ashley James (Dousman, Wisc./Team Kenda p/b Geargrinder), Kristin McGrath (Durango, Colo./Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12), Jessica Prinner (South Elgin, Ill./ABD Cycle Club) and Alison Starnes-Tetrick (Mill Valley, Calif./Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12) also competed for USA Cycling.

The race consisted of 177 riders, traversing five laps of a 24.4-kilometer circuit.

CAMPS

USA Cycling held a BMX camp for riders in the Junior Development Program, last week, under the watchful eye of BMX Program Director Mike King.

“The camp showed why this program is so important to our BMX development," King said. "We had riders who never rode down an eight-meter start ramp to doing full laps after three days. I was also impressed with our top Junior Development Program riders as they always seem to progress in our evaluation process.”
