Juniors Track National Championships commence in Carson
Carson, Calif. (June 25, 2014) – The five-day 2014 Juniors Track National Championships kicked off on Wednesday at the VELO Sports Center in Carson, Calif., with men's and women's 15-16 500m time trials, as well as the men's and women's 15-16 and 17-18 200m sprint qualifiers.
Victor Morandi (Houston, Texas/Northwest Cycling Club) and Summer Moak (Katy, Texas/ TWENTY16 Pro Cycling) took the first two gold medals at the 2014 Juniors Track National Championships, winning the men’s and women’s 15-16 500m time trials, respectively. The event led off the 15-16 men’s and women’s omniums. Morandi clocked a 34.932-second trial, besting Sandor Delgado’s (Hialeah, Fla./Interactive Metronome Development) 36.039-second run and the third-place 36.176-second mark of Lucas Deleon (Woodland Hills, Calif./Encino Velo Cycling Club). On the women’s side, Moak’s 37.400-second effort edged Eva Burke (Macungie, Pa./Sprinter’s Edge Track Development Team), whose 38.329-second run was good for second, while Allyson Wasielewski (Orefield, Pa./Sprinter’s Edge Track Development Team) took third in 38.972 seconds.
“My mind is still kind of racing a bit. It’s always really nerve-wracking to be here, but it’s good to get it over with, and I’m happy with what I got,” said Morandi. “It’s always great to have good competition. It always pushes me to go harder knowing that somebody else is there.”
Said Moak, “We’ve been racing each other since we were young, so it’s really nice seeing the same people coming out. I was just hoping for success, and that’s what it came down to.”
The day kicked off with the men’s 15-16 200m sprint qualifier, where 30 riders vied for 16 spots in the sprint rounds, which will begin on Thursday. Delgado took the top time at 11.523 seconds, followed by Morandi at 11.842 and Nick Oestreich (Powder Springs, Ga./Junior Flyers) in 11.974 to round out the top three.

James Mellen (Schnecksville, Pa./Sprinter’s Edge Track Development Team) and Edward Horvet (West Hills, Calif./LUX-Specialized by Cynergy) completed the top three with respective times of 11.019 and 11.348 seconds.
