Fourth day of Masters Road Nats crowns 20 road race champs

The 2011 USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships returned Saturday to Summit High School for the first day of road races. The morning races started in a chill, but the temperatures increased to a comfortable high of approximately 80 degrees.

Over 250 unique riders contested the road race course which stretched 57 kilometers for individuals and 84 kilometers for tandems. In all, 20 national titles were awarded on the first day of road races.

John Elgart (wearing green) won a pair of road race medals during Saturday's road races in Bend, Ore.

The men’s 65-69 started the day and John Elgart (Sacramento, Calif./Alto Velo Racing Club-Webcor) continued to reign in that age group, collecting his third Stars-and-Stripes jersey this week. Elgart barely edged Scott Hennessy (Salinas, Calif./VOS Racing) at the finish line. Daniel Wulbert (Cardiff, Calif./Sun Coast Velo-UC Cyclery-JW Floors) earned the gold medal in the men’s 70-74 road race by edging Stan Swallow (American Fork, Utah) and William Meyers (Oak Creek, Colo.) in a three-rider sprint to the finish line. Robert Paganini (Los Angeles, Calif./Pasadena Athletic Association-REMAX) barely nosed Walter Axthelm (Durango, Colo./Durango Wheel Club) to win the men’s 75-79 road race. Paul Tetrick (Evergreen Colo.) registered his second gold medal and third top-three finish of the week after winning the men’s 80-and-over road race

“It’s a great course. It’s a lot of fun,” Tetrick said. “There are a couple steep hills, but other than that, it’s pretty good. This course is one of the best I’ve ever ridden on.”

David LeDuc (Willow Springs, N.C./Atlantic Velo-Virginia p/b Walt’s Racing), who won the men’s 60-64 criterium on Thursday, collected his second Stars-and-Stripes jersey of the week by winning the road race Saturday by two seconds over Kenny Fuller (Corona Del Mar, Calif./Cycles Veloce-Team Simple Green-Bike Religion) and Wayne Watson (Denver, Colo./Natural Grocers Cycling Team).

Sue Butler (wearing blue) earned her first road gold medal in the women's 40-44 road race in Bend, Ore.

In the women’s races, the action was equally frenetic. After helping her teammate win gold on Thursday evening in the criterium, Sue Butler (Portland, Ore.), who considers Cyclo-cross her specialty, topped the women’s 40-44 podium in the road race on Saturday. Butler found herself in a move with Debbie Milne (Belden, Miss./Absolute Racing Team-MSMOC) and stuck with it. The two strong riders managed to open a gap on the field as they rode through their second lap before deciding the outcome in a sprint.

“I came out here to get some really good fitness for Cyclo-cross,” Butler said. “The event is in my backyard. I’m a Cat 2 on the road, so I’m not the smartest road racer. I sit on the front a lot. It’s a good experience. I’ve had a lot of fun.”

After narrowly losing the criterium on Thursday night, Tamara Bessette (Missoula, Mont./Northern Rockies Cycling Team-Northern Rockies Orthopaedic) sprinted every millimeter of the 57-kilometer course to win the women’s 45-49 road race. Bessette needed to as Wednesday’s time trial winner, Lise Grace (Bellingham, Wash./Union Bay Cycling-Bikesale.com), was charging hard down the stretch to earn the silver medal. Ruth Clemence (Newport Beach, Calif./Southern California Velo-Empower Coaching) collected her second gold medal of the week after winning the women’s 50-54 road race by nearly one minute over Thursday’s criterium winner Laura Howat (Salt Lake City, Utah/Utah Premier-Ski Utah Cycling Team). Linda Schnepf (Newport Beach, Calif./Cycle Veloce-Team Simple Green-Bike Religion) found a higher gear in the last kilometer, slightly edging Linda Elgart (Sacramento, Calif./Alto Velo Racing Club-Webcor) and Cindy Morgan (San Diego, Calif./CALCOAST Bikes San Diego) to win the women’s 55-59 contest. In a three-rider sprint to the finish, Kay Tsui (Arlington, Va./HPC) turned it up an extra level to win the women’s 60-64 contest by a bike length over Martha Iverson (Durango, Colo./Durango Wheel Club) and Phyllis Olrich (Grass Valley, Calif./Victory Velo). Patricia Baker (Laguna Hills, Calif./Lightning Velo-Cal-Pacific Export Packers) added another Stars-and-Stripes jersey to her closet by completing her course in 2:48:11 to win the women’s 70-and-over contest.

The tandem race consisted of three laps of the course, totaling 84 kilometers. The men's tandem of Jan Elsbach (Davis, Calif./VOS Racing) and John Elgart (Sacramento Calif./Alto Velo Racing Club-Webcor), who'd won the men's 65-69 road race earlier in the day, earned the gold medal in the 110-and-over contest. T.J. Paskewich (Bend, Ore.) and Timothy Jones (Bend, Ore.) edged the duo of Matthew Lerner (Louisville, Ky./Scheller's Racing Team) and Larry Stickler (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Flyers Cycling Inc.-Texas Roadhouse Cycling p/b Motorex) to win the men's tandem 70-and-over. The men's tandem 90-and-over competition was won by Stephen Spanbauer (Louisville, Ky./Better Cycling of Louisville-Papa John's Racing Team) and William Crecelius (Louisville, Ky./Better Cycling of Louisville-Papa John's Racing Team).

In the women's 90-and-over tandem contest, the combination of Jill Gass (Santa Barbara, Calif./B4T9-Foundation) and MaryAnn Levenson (Menlo Park, Calif./B4T9-Foundation) won by over 11 minutes. The duo of Julie Kaplan (Oxnard, Calif./Team Hammer Nutrition) and Elizabeth Benishin (Palo Alto, Calif./Velo Bella) completed the course in 2:35:00 to win the women's tandem 110-and-over contest.

In the mixed tandem 90-and-over race, the team of John and Jennifer Slawta (Talent, Ore.) edged the duo of Steven Holland (Vancouver, Wash./Emerald Velo Cycling Team Inc.) and Christine Jerko (Portland, Ore) for the win. Charles Townsend (Mendota Heights, Minn./St Paul Bicycle Racing Club-Bianchi-Grand Performance) and Sherry Berde Townsend (Mendota Heights, Minn/.Gopher Wheelmen-Gopher Wheelman) won the mixed tandem 110-and-over contest by nearly 10 minutes. Three teams proved to be the strength of the mixed tandem 70+ field as they dropped the fourth team after the first lap. With only three kilometers remaining in the race, the three teams remained deadlocked and a three-bike sprint decided the outcome of the race. The team of Hunter Allen (Big Island, Va./Peaks Coaching Group Racing Team) and Debra Preller (Bothell, Wash./Peaks Coaching Group Racing Team), who were dancing on their bike at the start of the race, had a stronger finishing sprint, edging the tandem of Dave Campbell (Newport, Ore.) and Kristina Lackner (Sherwood, Ore.) and the duo of Helene Carabin (Nichols Hills, Okla./Tulsa Wheelmen-Tulsa Tough Racing) and Gil Summy (Nichols Hills, Okla./Oklahoma City Velo Club).

The event, which will crown more than 60 national champions through its duration as well as a Best All-Around Rider and Best All-Around Team, finished Saturday with the second of two days of road races. Women 30-39 and men 30-59 will contest the course at Summit High School.
