Masters Road Nats start with 32 time trial titles

The 2011 USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships started with the time trial on a brisk, windy but sunny Wednesday morning at Summit High School in Bend, Ore. In all, 32 national titles were awarded in the race against the clock.

Nearly 300 riders contested the individual time trial, which started at Summit High School and featured climbs of varying distances before turning around and looping around Tetherow Golf Club and returning to the finish line.

Richard Feldman finished second in the men's 40-44 time trial at the 2011 USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships.
Richard Feldman finished second in the men's 40-44 time trial at the 2011 USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships.
The best description of the course came from the winner of the women’s 40-44 time trial, Giana Roberge (Santa Rosa, Calif./Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12). “This is a very challenging time trial course,” Roberge said. “You have to think and pick good lines. You have to figure out when to conserve energy. I spent a lot of time studying and riding this course, when I should stay in or come out of the bars. It just tests you as an athlete. Other courses are flatter. You can ride a lot of them just with rhythm. On the descents you can get complacent. Kristin Armstrong gave me some tips. She told me that you still have to put power out.”

Roberge, who had a stellar career as a professional rider, sought counsel from several distinguished time trialists. Roberge got advice from 2008 Olympic gold medalist Kristin Armstrong, Kristin McGrath and Alison Tetrick-Starnes before riding the course. Her panel of experts provided sage advice as the director sportif for Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 earned the Stars-and-Stripes jersey in her age group.

Kris Lunning (San Rafael, Calif./Marc Pro - Strava) topped the men’s 30-34 podium with a time of 34:35 while Michael Olheiser (Huntsville, Ala./Team juwi solar-First Solar), who posted the fastest time among the 25-kilometer riders, added to his collection of national championships by posting a time of 33:17 to win the men’s 35-39. Christopher Lyman (Napa, Calif./Team Specialized Racing Masters), who, with his wife, runs a public relations firm in northern California, won the men’s 40-44 time trial with a time of 33:26. The 2010 Masters men time trial world champion Richard Feldman (Ketchum, Idaho/Durance Colnago), who has six masters time trial national titles, placed second, just five seconds behind Lyman. Brendan Sullivan (Atlanta, Ga./Iron Data Racing) took top honors in the men’s 45-49 with a time of 34:04. Kevin Matcalfe (Pleasant Hill, Calif./ Team Specialized Racing Masters) won the men’s 50-54 with a time of 34:31. Dave Zimbelman (The Dalles, Ore.) posted the best time among men 55-59, completing the 25-kilometer course in 34:53. Kenny Fuller’s (Corona Del Mar, Calif./Cycles Veloce-Team Simple Green-Bike Religion) time of 36:25 topped the men’s 60-64 podium while Scott Hennessy (Salinas, Calif./VOS Racing) covered 18 kilometers in 27:20 to win the men’s 65-69 contest. William Meyers (Oak Creek, Colo./Schwab Cycles Racing Team) won the men’s 70-74 time trial with a time of 29:38 while Walter Axthelm (Durango, Colo./Durango Wheel Club) topped the men’s 75-79 podium after registering a time of 31:24. Paul Tetrick (Evergreen, Colo.), who is Tetrick-Starnes’ grandfather, won the men’s 80+ race with a time of 37:01 to add to his expansive collection of Stars-and-Stripes jerseys.

Link Lindquist (Foothill Ranch, Calif./Team VeloSport Club), who placed third in the men’s 80+ time trial, was very pleased with his effort. “Out of three, I finished third,” Lindquist explained. “I'm the oldest guy in the group. I did what I wanted to do, which is do the course in 40 minutes, which would be my best time on a course like that. I did 40:23, so I'm happy. Getting better as I get older. That's the challenge for me, always. It's not always how I place, but it's against me. So, I don't have to worry about people being younger. Do I get better as I get older? That's my game plan.”

Jessica Cutler (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Super Squadra-Cucina Fresca Cycling Team) earned the gold medal in the women’s 30-34 time trial with an impressive mark of 38:32. Mindy Caruso’s (Albuquerque, N.M./Olev Rapido-The Kickstand) 39:34 stood up as the fastest among women 35-39 while Lise Grace (Bellingham, Wash./Union Bay Cycling-Bikesale.com) won the women’s 45-49 with a time of 40:20. In the women’s 50-54 race, Ruth Clemence (Newport Beach, Calif./Southern California VELO-Empower Coaching) posted a time of 38:28, the fastest among the females to contest 25 kilometers, to earn the Stars-and-Stripes jersey. Arrietta Clauss (Madison, Wisc./MadCity Velo Club) completed the course in 29:03 to win the women’s 55-59 while Laura Lindgren (Long Beach, Calif./La Habra Cyclery-Chronic Tacos Cycling) topped the women’s 60-64 podium with a time of 31:15. Dagmar Eriksson (Bend, Ore.), who also competes in cross-country skiing, topped the women’s 65-69 podium with a time of 39:48 while Patty Puz (Sun Valley, Idaho/Durance-Colnago/Durance-Colnago) won the women’s 70+ contest with a time of 38:09.

All of the tandem pairs contested on a 30-kilometer course. The team of John Elgart (Sacramento, Calif./Alto Velo Racing Club-Webcor-Alto Velo) and Jan Elsbach (Davis, Calif./VOS Racing) posted the best time among any tandem completing their ride in 44:20 to win the men's 110+ contest. The pair of Scott Raymond (Cypress, Calif./BGM Sports-Schroeder Iron Masters) and Frank Schroeder (Fontana, Calif./BGM Sports-Schroeder Iron Masters) topped the men's elite tandems with a time of 44:25. The men's 70+ contest was won by over three minutes by local riders Timothy Jones (Bend, Ore.) and T.J. Paskewich (Bend, Ore.). Scott Kuiper (Louisville, Ky./Better Cycling of Louisville-Papa John's Racing Team) and Stephen Spanbauer (Louisville, Ky./Better Cycling of Louisville-Papa John's Racing Team) teamed up to earn Stars-and-Stripes jerseys in the men's 90+ race.

The tandem of Beth Graff (Tacoma, Wash./Old Town Bicycle-Old Town Bicycle Race Team) and Steven Worley (Boulder, Colo./Vic's Espresso-Peerless Tyre) registered a mark of 47:51 to top the mixed tandem 110+ podium. Jennifer Slawta (Talent, Ore.) and John Slawta (Talent, Ore.) won the mixed tandem 90+ race by 21 seconds.

Jan Moss (Milwaukie, Ore.) and Sarah Tisdale (Hillsboro, Ore.) posted a time of 50:24 to win the women's elite tandem race while Elizabeth Benishin (Palo Alto, Calif./Velo Bella) and Julie Kaplan (Oxnard, Calif./Team Hammer Nutrition) won by 13 minutes in the women's tandem 110+ contest. In the women's tandem 70+ race, Julie Cutts (Las Vegas, Nev./Wicked Cycling Inc.-Colavita-Outback Steakhouse Las Vegas) and Coleen Knutson (Las Vegas, Nev./Wicked Cycling Inc.-Colavita-Outback Steakhouse Las Vegas) earned the spot spot on the podium with a margin of nearly 20 minutes in the women's tandem 70+ race.
