Devo Wrap: Lessons learned in Italy & El Salvador

The women of USA Cycling's National Development Program were in action in two different races, last week. One group of women contested the GP Grand Saint Bernard in El Salvador while another competed in Italy in the Trofeo Alfredo Binda-Comune di Cittiglio.

GP Grand Saint Bernard

Amber Neben (Lake Forest, Calif./Specialized-lululemon) topped the Americans' effort at the GP Grand Saint Bernard in El Salvador on Wednesday, March 21. In the final results, Neben placed 15th, 5:17 behind the race winner Evelyn Garcia (ESA).

The previous week's six-stage Vuelta El Salvador (Neben won three jerseys and finished fourth in the race) caught up to the Americans as several American attacks were answered. The remaining three USA Cycling riders, Janel Holcomb (San Diego, Calif./Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies), Jessica Prinner (South Elgin, Ill./ABD Cycling Club) and Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif./Exergy Twenty12), finished 19:39 behind Garcia, placing 48th, 49th and 50th, respectively.

Neben was in a late move with 15 kilometers remaining in the 100-kilometer race along with a few other riders, but a bumpy descent did not favor her as she finished 15th.

In the final results, the American contingent placed two riders within one minute of the winner, Marianne Vos (NED), as Armstrong and Carmen Small (Durango, Colo./Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) finished 41 and 52 seconds back, respectively. Tayler Wiles (Sandy, Utah/Exergy Twenty12) finished the race 6:34 behind Vos.

The following seven U23 men will contest Le Triptyque des Monts et Chateaux for USA Cycling from March 30-April 1 in Belgium:
