WOMEN

Holland Ladies Tour 2011

A group of junior riders contested the Rothaus Regio Tour, a four-day stage race in and around the Freiburg area of Germany from Sept. 8-11. Alexey Vermeulen (Pinckney, Mich./Prochain) registered the contingent's best result, placing 10th overall, but all of the riders finished within 7:36 of the winner.

Vermeulen recorded a strong result in the opening stage, a 9.8-kilometer uphill time trial, as he finished 18th, 1:49 behind France's Pierre-Roger Latour. Colby Wait-Molyneux (Vancouver, Wash./Hammer Nutrition-CMG Racing Team) and Kristo Jorgenson (Boise, Idaho/BYRDS) were the next best placed USA Cycling riders, finishing 39th and 40th, respectively.

Alex Darville (Santa Barbara, Calif./Echelon Santa Barbara) found the podium after winning a field sprint for third place in the second stage. Darville was just two seconds behind the two stage leaders after the rolling 98.5-kilometer course. Paul Lynch (Colchester, Conn./Hot Tubes Development Cycling) placed 18th in the stage.

The 127-kilometer third stage featured many hills and loops. The French contingent tried to control the day's race, but a two-man break escaped from the lead group. Vermeulen, who finished sixth in the stage, was in the lead group to help him move into ninth overall.

The final stage included nearly 1,400 meters of climbing and finished in the town of Mullheim. The Australian contingent chased an extremely dangerous break that contained Stage 1 winner and virtual leader, Latour. The USA Cycling contingent had a myriad of issues that restricted moving Vermeulen into a higher overall place, but lessons were learned and he retained a 10th place finish.
