Cole Davis finished fifth at the Internationale Driedaagse Junioren
Cole Davis finished fifth at the challenging Internationale Driedaagse Junioren in the Netherlands with the help of his U.S. teammates.
(May 23, 2017) – Cole Davis (Folsom, Calif./Team Specialized Racing) topped the U.S. effort at the four-stage International Driedaagse Junioren with a fifth-place finish in the race held in and around Axel, Netherlands, May 19-21. Davis was 46 seconds off the winning time of Alex Molenaar (NED) in the 37th edition of the race known for challenging even the hardiest of junior men with rain, wind, small roads, hills and cobblestones.

Davis was second on stage one and set himself up for a great finish with the help of teammates Conor Schunk (Charlotte, N.C./Masters Cycling Systems LLC), Bjorn Larson (Duluth, Minn./Masters Cycling Systems LLC/Holowesko/Citadel p/b Hincapie Racing), Mark Yaroshevsky (San Diego, Calif./Swami’s Junior Development Team), Kendrick Boots (Centennial, Colo./Groove Subaru Excel Sports) and Camden Vodicka (Carlsbad, Calif./LUX Cycling).

In the morning time trial of stage two, Larson placed a solid ninth while Davis slipped to fifth overall.

On stage three, a stage fraught with small circuits on cobblestones, Team USA Juniors did their best to keep Davis in good position entering the finale and they succeeded in doing so. With a pack finish, Davis was in good position for the final hilly, technical stage that included multiple runs of the Paddestraat, a long section of cobblestones that, when wet, are absolutely treacherous.

Stage four saw some riders slip off the front to pose a danger to Davis’ overall position, but the pack eventually reeled them in in the final 10 kilometers and the gap of one minute was reduced to just 20 seconds at the line with the help of Schunk and Yaroshevsky doing the hardest work to narrow the gap in the last 20km.

Schunk finished 21st and Yaroshevsky was 76th in the final classification.

“The Dreidaagse is one of the hardest races on the junior calendar and will toughen up any junior that is able to complete the race in one piece, but they all leave a little bit of themselves on the roads in Zeeland,” said Junior National Program Director Billy Innes. “Fifth place overall in GC is a very strong result and I’m very proud of all the guys that toughed it out this weekend.”
