Davison fourth at final cross-country world cup

Print Colorado Springs, Colo. (Sept. 16, 2013) -- Lea Davison (Jericho, Vt./Specialized Racing XC) capped off the World Cup season with a fourth-place finish on Saturday at the UCI World Cup in Hafjell, Norway. It was the final cross-country world cup of 2013.
Davison, who won the elite women’s cross-country and short track cross-country races at the 2013 USA Cycling Cross-Country Mountain Bike Nationals Championships as well as the USA Cycling Pro Mountain Bike Cross-Country Tour (Pro XCT) in 2013, went to the front with three other riders on the first lap of the six-lap elite women's race. She dropped off the pace on the third lap, but was able to maintain that position to cross the line in fourth place, 54 seconds behind winner Irina Kalentieva of Russia who finished in 1:25:34. It was the eighth cross-country world cup win of Kalentieva's career.
Georgia Gould (Fort Collins, Colo./Luna Pro Team) placed 20th in the race, 9:24 off the pace, Mary McConneloug (Chilmark, Mass./Team KENDA-Stan's NoTubes) was 10:36 back in 24th place, while
Erin Huck (Boulder, Colo./Tokyo Joes) finished 14:38 behind Kalentieva in 35th place.
Davison also placed seventh in the women's cross-country eliminator while Huck was 23rd. Sweden's Jenny Rissveds took the win.
Other American riders completing the cross-country races were Michael Broderick (Chilmark, Mass./Team KENDA-Stan's NoTubes) placing 57th in the elite men's race, and Liam Earl (Boise, Idaho/BYRDS (Boise Young Rider Dev Squad)) finishing 41st in the juniors men's event.
In downhill elite men's action, Neko Mulally (Reading, Pa./Trek World Racing) was the top American in 11th place. Mullaly placed 7.859 seconds behind winner Steve Smith of Canada. Mitch Ropelato (Ogden, Utah/Factory Specialized DH) was the next U.S. rider in the final order in 19th place, followed by Luke Strobel (Issaquah, Wash./Evil Bikes-Evil Vengeance Tour) in 27th, Richard Rude Jr. (Redding, Conn./Yeti Fox Shox Factory Race Team) in 55th and Sebastiaan Van Steenbergen in 71st place.
Luca Shaw (Hendersonville, N.C./Specialized Gravity DH) placed 23rd in the juniors men's downhill, 31.896 seconds behind winner Michael Jones of Great Britain.
The final downhill World Cup of the 2013 season will take place Sept. 21-22 in Leogang, Austria.
In the final cross-country world cup standings for 2013, Davison finished 10th with 582 points, followed by Gould in 17th with 386 points, McConneloug in 22nd with 311 points, and Judy Freeman (Littleton, Colo./Crankbrothers Race Club) in 40th place with 135 points. Slovenia's Tanja Zakelj topped the women's cross-country standings with 1,080 points.
Davison and Gould also ranked 17th and 18th, respectively, in the women's cross-country eliminator final standings. They both finished with 16 points. Sweden's Alexandra Engen placed first with 220 points.
Shayna Powless (Roseville, Calif./BMC Mountain Bike Development Team USA) was the top American in the women's U23 cross-country final standings. She placed 22nd with 31 points. Rebecca Henderson of Australia led the way with 440 points on the season.
Switzerland's Nino Schurter topped the men's elite cross-country world cup standings with 1,180 points. The top American on the list was Stephen Ettinger (Bozeman, Mont./BMC Mountain Bike Team) in 63rd place with 66 points.
In the final men's U23 world cup rankings, Howard Grotts (Durango, Colo./Specialized Racing) was the top U.S. rider with 36 points, good for 24th place. Kerry Werner (Banner Elk, N.C./BMC U23 Development Team) was 27th with 30 points, followed by Keegan Swenson (Park City, Utah/Cannondale Factory Racing) in 34th place with 18 points. Germany's Markus Schulte-Luenzum placed first with 310 points.
With one world cup event remaining on the downhill calendar, Great Britain's Gee Atherton leads the men's elite downhill rankings with 966 points. Aaron Gwin (Wildomar, Calif./Specialized Racing DH) sits in 11th place with 417 points after his fifth-place finish at Mont-Sainte-Anne, Quebec, Canada. Other Americans near the top of the downhill standings are Mulally in 17th place with 322 points, and Strobel in 34th place with a total of 218.
Jill Kintner (Seattle, Wash./Team Norco International) sits in ninth place in the women's downhill standings with 241 points. Rachel Atherton of Great Britain, who has won four out of the first five world cup events, has accumulated 1,085 points to date.
Shaw is eighth in the juniors men's downhill rankings with 80 points. Michael Jones of Great Britain leads the way in that category with 176 points.
