Mont-Sainte-Anne, Canada (August 11, 2013) — Fresh off his win in the pro men’s downhill at the 2013 USA Cycling Gravity National Championships, Aaron Gwin (Wildomar, Calif./Specialized Racing DH) placed fifth in the elite men’s downhill at the UCI Mountain World Cup in Mont-Sainte-Anne, Quebec, Canada, on Sunday.

The course was drenched by a brief rain storm before Gwin’s finals ride, but the American managed to stop the clock at 4:01.608. It was slightly more than three seconds slower than Canadian Steve Smith’s (CAN/Devinci Global Racing) winning time of 3:58.485. For Gwin, it was his best result of the 2013 world cup season.

In the men’s juniors downhill, Luca Shaw (Hendersonville, N.C./Specialized Gravity DH) and Luca Cometti (San Diego, Calif./Nema Nukeproof) both notched top ten finishes, placing eighth and ninth, respectively. Rebecca Gardner (Marlboro, N.Y.) was the highest American women in her elite downhill competition, crossing the line in 17th.

Gwin, Shaw and Cometti are among the 35 riders who will represent Team USA in cross-country and downhill at the 2013 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships beginning later this month in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. This is the final world cup before that event.
