Compton wins second elite women's World Cup race of the season

  
  


Colorado Springs, Colo. (November 24, 2012) -- Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Trek Cyclocross) recorded her second elite women's win in a UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup race this season on Saturday in Koksijde, Belgium. Logan Owen (Bremerton, Wash./Team Redline) placed fifth in the juniors men's race.

Compton bested the 34-woman field, beating her closest competitor, Nikki Harris (GBR), by nearly 90 seconds. Compton completed the race in 44:10 while Harris was 1:27 behind her in second place. Sanne Cant (BEL) placed third, 29 seconds behind Harris. Amy Dombroski (Boulder, Colo./Young Telenet-Fidea Cycling Team) placed 11th, 3:31 behind Compton and Christine Vardaros (Wyckoff, N.J./ BABOCO Cycling Team) was one lap down.

After Saturday's race in Belgium, Compton, who won the world cup race in Plzen, Czech Republic in October, leads Sanne Van Paassen (NED), Harris and Helen Wyman (GBR) by 40 points apiece in the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup standings. After three of eight UCI Cyclo-cross World cup races, Compton has amassed 170 points while her chasers each have 130 points. Dombroski is in 14th place with 42 points. Kaitlin Antonneau (Racine, Wis./Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com) is on Dombroski's heels with 37 points. Maureen Bruno Roy (Arlington, Mass./Red Mill p/b Seven Cycles) has 17 points in 26th place while Vardaros has four points in 41st place.

Owen finished in fifth place in Saturday's juniors men's race at the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup. Owen finished the race just 2:57 behind the winner Mathieu Van Der Poel (NED), who completed the course in 45:17. Quinten Hermans (BEL) placed second, finishing 1:35 behind Van Der Poel while Matijn Budding (NED) was 2:02 back. Curtis White (Delanson, N.Y./Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team) finished the race in 10th place, 3:48 behind Van Der Poel.

After three of six races for the juniors men on the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup circuit, Owen sits in fourth place with 115 points. Van Der Poel tops the group with 180 points. White is in 15th place with 42 points.

Jonathan Page (Northfield, N.H./Planet Bike) finished the elite men's race in 32nd place, 5:38 behind the race winner Sven Nys (BEL), who completed the contest in 59:34. Niels Albert (BEL) and Francis Mourey (FRA) placed second and third, respectively.

Page is the best-placed American in the elite men's UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup standings, sitting in 29th place with 60 points. Jeremy Powers (Easthampton, Mass./Rapha-Focus) has 48 points in 35th place while Timothy Johnson (Middleton, Mass./ Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com) is in 48th place with 21 points.

Zach McDonald (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Rapha-Focus) finised 21st in Saturday's race, 3:24 behind the winner Wietse Bosmans (BEL). Bosmans narrowly edged Michiel Van Der Heijden (NED), winning by one second, to the finish line. Wout Van Aert (BEL) earned the bronze medal, finishing 14 seconds behind Bosmans.

After three of six races for the U23 men on the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup circuit, McDonald currently sits in eighth place with 68 points. Bosmans, the standings leader, has 165 points. Cody Kaiser (El Dorado Hills, Calif./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) sits in 43rd place with three points.

The next UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup race for the elite men and women will be next weekend in Roubaix, France. The U23 and juniors men will next compete in a UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup race on Dec. 26 in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium.
