Compton rides to silver at Cyclo-cross World Cup opener in Tabor

Elite Women
After trading the lead position several times throughout the race with Sanne van Paassen (Netherlands), American strongwoman Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Trek Cyclocross collective) came up short in the sprint finish and took the silver medal behind van Paassen. British rider Helen Wyman rounded out the podium in third.
Also posting an outstanding result for the United States was Kaitlin Antonneau (Racine, Wis./Cyclocrossworld/Cannondale) in ninth. Amy Dombroski (Boulder, Colo./Vzw Young Telenet Fidea Cycling Team) was 19th, Maureen Bruno Roy (Arlington, Mass./Red Mill p/b Seven Cycles) was 22nd, and Christine Vardaros (Wyckoff, NJ/ BABOCO Cycling Team) finished in 30th.
U23 men
American Zach McDonald (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Team Rapha-FOCUS) barely missed out on the podium with a fourth-place effort in the U23 event. Taking the win was Mike Teunissen (Netherlands) while Corne Van Kessel (Netherlands) and Wietse Bosmans (Belgium) were second and third. Also riding for the United States was Cody Kaiser (El Dorado Hills, Calif./ California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) in 39th place.
Junior Men

Another exceptional effort for the U.S. came from junior rider Logan Owen (Bermerton, Wash./Team Redline). Owen used his speed and tactical sense to place fifth in the junior men’s event. Winning the race was reigning junior world champ Mathieu van der Poel (Netherlands), and Quinten Hermans (Belgium) and Karel Pokorny (Czech Republic) were second and third. Owen was joined in the race by compatriot Curtis White (Delanson, NY/Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team) who completed the event in 29th place.
Elite Men
In the elite men’s event, Jeremy Powers (East Hampton, Mass./Rapha-Focus) had the top result for the red, white and blue in seventh-place. The event was won by Belgian Kevin Pauwels while
Lars van der Haar (Netherlands) outsprinted Niels Albert (BEL) for the silver medal. Also racing for the U.S. was Jonathan Page (Northfield, NH) in 29th and Tim Johnson (Middleton, Mass./Cyclocrossworld-Cannondale) in 30th.
World Cup action will continue with round two next weekend in Plzen, Czech Republic where the same roster of Americans will compete.
