Zabriskie regains Stars-and-Stripes in Pro Time Trial

Print Dave Zabriskie (Westlake Village, Calif./Garmin-Cervelo) regained the Stars-and-Stripes jersey following a convincing victory at the Greenville Hospital Systems USA Cycling Professional Time Trial National Championships presented by Duke Energy on Saturday. Zabriskie bested silver-medalist Tom Zirbel (Boulder, Colo./Jamis-Sutter Home) by just over 30 seconds to take his sixth time trial national title.
Zabriskie celebrates regaining his Stars-and-Stripes atop the podium with USA Cycling CEO Steve Johnson and other dignitaries.“I came here for one reason, to win and take that jersey back and I accomplished that,” said Zabriskie, a two-time world championship medalist in the discipline. “I really love this event and wearing the Stars-and-Stripes – I take a lot of pride in that.”
Zabriskie completed the 20.7-mile rolling course in a time of 40:23.47, just off the course record of 39:37.14, which he set in 2009. Zirbel, the 2009 silver medalist, posted a 40:54.79 to earn his second national championship medal in this event.
“It’s definitely an emotional day for me,” explained Zirbel. “Before the race I was pretty focused but I didn’t really know what to expect because I didn’t have a time trial (due to mechanical difficulties) in California (AMGEN Tour of California). Now that I have a chance to reflect I’m getting a bit chocked up.”
Moving up from fifth last year, Matthew Busche (Las Cruces, N.M./Team RadioShack) rounded out the podium, edging Brent Bookwalter (Athens, Ga./BMC Racing) by approximately a tenth of a second for the bronze with a time of 41:22.06.
“Coming in, I really had no expectations; I was honestly focused on the road race.” said Busche. “Coming out of California I knew I had pretty good form, but I knew Dave was riding like lightning and guys like Brent (Bookwalter) and Tejay (VanGarderen) are tough.”
Coming off a win in the Solvang time trial at the AMGEN Tour of California, Zabriskie looked to be in strong form posting a course record opening lap time of 13:10, putting him comfortably in the lead with only defending champion, Taylor Phinney (Boulder, Colo./BMC Racing) remaining. Also coming off the tough AMGEN Tour of California the young Phinney couldn’t match those times posting only the sixth best opening lap at 13:45.
“Last year, when I found out I was going to miss (this event), I took that kinda personally,” said Zabriskie at the post-race press conference. “When I saw Taylor (Phinney) in the jersey, I was kinda, grrr, but he represented it well. It feels good to have it back.”
Following Bookwalter’s podium near-miss, reigning USA Cycling Professional Road Race National Champion Ben King (North Garden, Va./Team RadioShack) finished fifth with a time of 41:42. Former time trial junior world champion Danny Pate (Colorado Springs, Colo./HTC-Highroad) turned in the sixth best time at 42:00, just ahead of Phinney in seventh (42:13).

Hand Cycling
The same course at Clemson University - International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) also hosted a morning time trial for the 2011 Roger C. Peace Hospital – Rehabilitation U.S. Hand Cycling Series presented by Paralyzed Veterans of America. Nearly 40 competitors rode two laps for the final time trial of the series this year. Dane Pilon (Fayetteville, N.C.) had the best overall time of 36:25.7, winning the men’s H4 category. The men’s H3 category was won by Mitchell Postell (Snellville, Ga.), the men’s H2 category was won by Matt Updike (Denver, Colo.); Thomas Kahler (Clinton, Tenn.) won the men’s H1; the women’s H1 category was won by Cassie Mitchell of Atlanta, Ga. and Ashley Cooper of Kingsland, Ga. won the women’s H3.
Monday’s Road Race
Over 100 of the nation’s top professional cyclists will face off in Monday’s USA Cycling Professional Road Race Championship. Many of today’s time trialists, including defending champion King will be joined by top riders such as three-time national road champion George Hincapie (Greenville, S.C./Team BMC), USA Cycling Professional Criterium National Champion Daniel Holloway (Morgan Hill, Calif./Kelly Benefits), 2008 USA Cycling Collegiate Road Race National Champion Chris Butler (Hilton Head, S.C./BMC Racing) and more.
The 115-mile course will include three short downtown circuits, four long laps over Paris Mountain, and then three finishing downtown circuits. The race begins at 11 a.m. in downtown Greenville and is expected to finish close to 3 p.m. Once the pro cyclists depart downtown on the first large lap, a 30-minute criterium will commence for U.S. Hand cycling athletes, also with start/finish at South Main and Camperdown streets.
From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. spectators can enjoy a free Health & Wellness Expo, located along South Main Street. Greenville Hospital System, the title sponsor for the championships, will provide a hand cycling demonstration and activities with Safe Kids.
