Zabriskie earns seventh time trial national title in Greenville

Print Dave Zabriskie (Westlake Village, Calif./Garmin-Barracuda) on Saturday collected his seventh victory in the time trial at the 2012 Greenville Hospital System USA Cycling Professional Time Trial National Championships presented by Duke Energy in Greenville, S.C.
Zabriskie overcame temperatures approaching 90 degrees and completed the 20.7-mile course in 40:41.44, six seconds faster than his closest competitor, 23-year-old Tejay van Garderen (Fort Collins, Colo./BMC Racing Team), who earned the silver medal.

Zabriskie was the last rider to start the course, but he didn’t waste any time making noise. Each of his three laps were the fastest of the day, including completing his first lap in 13:18, unseating van Garderen’s mark of 13:23 as the fastest of the day. The 23-year-old van Garderen was the 16th of 35 riders out of the starting gate and his final time of 40:47.90 stood as the fastest until Zabriskie bumped him from the top spot.
“It was a good ride,” van Garderen said. “I look back and I left everything on the course. I can't say that I have any regrets. Six seconds is a tough pill to swallow. It would have been easier to be second place by 40 seconds because then you know that there's nothing you could have done. When it's six seconds, that's when you look back and you're like, 'Could I have gone a little better there or taken a corner different?' What's done is done."
Van Garderen’s teammate, Brent Bookwalter (Athens, Ga./BMC Racing Team), collected the bronze medal, finishing with a time of 41:08.06.
Last year’s silver medalist, Tom Zirbel (Boulder, Colo./Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) placed fourth, 15 seconds faster than the fifth-place Nathan English (Berkeley, Calif./Kenda 5 Hour Energy p/b Geargrinder).
Hand Cycling
The same course at Clemson University-International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) served as the venue for the U.S. Handcycling Series Time Trial.
Aaron Trent (Colorado Springs, Colo.), a competitor in the C4 category, registered the best time, completing the 22.2-kilometer course in 33:08.00. Also winning their respective categories were: Ryan Boyle (Dewitt, N.Y.) in T2, Bryant Young (Greenville, S.C.) in C2, Jason Kimball (Spring Lake, N.C.) in C3, Anthony Pedeferri (Camarillo, Calif.) in H1, David Randall (Mansfield, Ohio) in H2, Carlos Moleda (Bluffton, S.C.) in H3 and Scott McNeice (St. Petersburg, Fla.). Among the women, Ashley Brelsford Dana (Putney, Vt.) registered a time of 47:32.45 to win the women's H2 while Thea Rosa (Cool, Calif.) won the women's H3 category.
Monday’s Road Race
Over 100 of the nation’s top professional cyclists will face off in Monday’s 2012 Greenville Hospital USA Cycling Professional Road Race Championship presented by TD Bank which will be streamed live online. Many of today’s time trialists, including defending road race champion Matthew Busche (Wauwatosa, Wisc./RadioShack-Nissan-Trek) will be joined by top riders such as three-time national road champion George Hincapie (Greenville, S.C./BMC Racing Team), Chris Horner (San Diego, Calif./RadioShack-Nissan-Trek), noted American sprinter Tyler Farrar (Wenatchee, Wash./Garmin-Barracuda) and more.
The 112.4-mile course will include three short downtown circuits, four long laps over Paris Mountain, and then three finishing downtown circuits finishing at the intersection of Main and McBee Streets in downtown Greenville. The race begins at noon in downtown Greenville and is expected to finish close to 4 p.m.
A new wrinkle to the Greenville edition of the contest is the Volkswagen King of the Mountain. On each of the four trips up Paris Mountain, the top five riders will be scored. The first rider to the top will receive 10 points and the next four successive riders will receive seven, five, three and one point, respectively. The rider who finishes the race with the most Volkswagen King of the Mountain points will receive the jersey at the podium ceremony and a check for $1,000.
The hand cyclists on Monday at 12:35 p.m. will contest the Roger C. Peace Rehabilitation Hospital Handcycling Criterium Championships. The 25-minute race will see riders turn laps on course stretching eight-tenths of a mile beginning at the corner of Main and McBee Streets in downtown Greenville.
On Sunday, the Volkswagen Twitter ride will meet at Hincapie Sports (45 Pete Hollis Blvd, Greenville, S.C.) at 8:30 a.m. for a fun ride. There will be drawings and prizes as riders complete one lap of the course that will be used in Monday’s road race.
